  • 16" Apes GOING ON THE XS!!!

Hey everyone... Next week im gonna try to install a set of 16in ape hangers on my XS1100S... This will be the most involved work that i have done to my bike as of yet. Im not really sure how its going to go, but im really looking forward to doing it. (im even more looking forward to saving about $500 doing it myself compared to what it would cost to have them installed.)

What i would really like from you all is to see if you have any advice, or troublshooting hints that you could share... For those of you who have done something like this then i would love to hear about the install and if there is anything that i would really want to pay special attn to durning the work...

The exact measurements of the lines and cables I will need so they are not too long or short and places I can order premade accessories Online if its possible to get the right sizes would also help. I had planned on trying to run the wiring inside of the bars (but i plan on a lot of things, we'll see how it turns out) What do I need here and what can I make myself or buy cheap and cut to size: break line, throttle cable, idle cable, clutch cable and a wiring kit? Any tips to save money are VERY WELCOME!

Thanks a lot guys...and ill be sure to post a pic when she has her knew bars!

What's the difference between erotic and kinky?
    Erotic = using a feather
Kinky = using the whole chicken

    Hi Derrick,
it's real easy to swap in different 'bars, what's hard is finding the lengths of the longer hose/cable/wiring you will need.
    Here's what I'd do:-
Swap in the new bars, just let the controls hang down on their cables/hoses/wires for now.
Fake up cables etc. out of something stiffly flexible, like house wiring, to find out the lengths of the extended hose/cable/wiring you'll need to order.
Put the old bars back on so you can ride until the new stuff arrives.
If you are handy with wiring it'd be simpler and cheaper to DIY the electrics by cutting the existing wiring and soldering or crimping extensions in.

Thanks fred I sure appreciate ya!!! A post i did awhile back someone tried to explain to me that theres generic hoses and cables and stuff that I can cut to length myself? Any special tools required? Oops! forget all that IT WAS YOUUU!!! I found the old post and to answer your old question The Germans are letting me get away with it but its costing me a arm and a leg. Anything that has sharp edges is not legal so theres only certain parts I bars or other stuff I can add to the bike. They will still ride my bike and try it out and see if its drivable before they turn me loose so i hope they work out parts here are also about quadruple what you pay in the States thatswhy Im always begging people to send me stuff on here All this is gonna cost me a pretty penny so i just hope I like the bike when its all done

you sayed awhile back MikesXS has the cables and soldering the nipples easy? Use resin based paste flux AND flux-cored solder? Not sure if I know what any of those are but I'll do my research. Looked on YouTube and unfortunately cant find any vids or anything on how to SOLDER THE NIPPLES

You can get custom stainless brake lines from Galfer in any length. You also get to specify what angle goes on the fittings on the ends. I bought mine through Pashnit.com. It took two weeks to get them, but I'm happy with the product.

One other thing- you can get the lines in a bunch of different colors.

When I put S/S brake lines on my XJ, I got them from a local bike shop. They were pre-made Russell lines with screw-on banjo fittings. I went with the local shop thinking they were going to be more costly than ordering the Galfer lines, but if I remember correct they were cheaper at $75 everything except for a small line that IIRC is part of my interlinked breaks.

I'd bet Galfer lines would be a bit higher quality, though.

I have brake lines made at a nearby hydraulic shop, cheap. Even auto brake shops often have the equipment to make brake lines.
