  • Banjo bolt sizes?

I want to buy some black anodized aluminum banjo bolts to match the black banjos on the new SS lines I bought. What I need to know is the right size for the six matching bolts and the splitter bolt. Also, How are these measured? I have a fairly good digital caliper, but I just don't get the same numbers that Spiegler has on the web site ie: (M10x1.0 or M10x1.25). I mean who wants to order the wrong parts. Help or suggestions appreciated. Thanks

fyi, this is what I just put on my 78' XS1100E last week. SS + Banjo + Bolts from Z1. Was 1.25 pitch for my original XS11 calipers.

Howdy, I don't know if you really meant aluminum banjo bolt, but if you did, you mighty want to give that a second thought. Like metals, (aluminum and aluminum, brass and brass, etc,) when used as threads, tend to gall, usually when being made up. Then when you go to take the joint apart, the threads are literally welded together. It is the same mechanism that happens when a bearing seizes. The high points of the surfaces are smeared together, causing friction welding, and then you have a problem. The rule of thumb that I heard was that the two had to have a difference of 5 points on the Rockwell C scale to avoid problems.
The master cylinder casting is aluminum, and even though an aluminum banjo bolt is anodized, the anodized surface is only a few tenths thick, and easily ruptured. And if it is not hard anodized, the difference is not that much. You can use never seize on the threads, and forestall the problem, but it is not a good idea to use any thread sealer in the brake line system, due to possibility of fluid contamination. There is a reason that the bolts are made of steel, and a hundred years of experience is hard to argue with.
If the MC was made of steel, then aluminum banjos would be fine, but, you may have a problem. Let us know how it works out if you go that route. CZ

          Aluminum banjo bolts.

Thanks for the advice. I was wondering myself if there might be problems with the aluminum bolts. My thoughts were whether or not they would be able to be torqued properly and not shear off. Getting that out would suck. But from what your saying they might hold too well. (like forever) I have been reading that the brake fluid itself can provide enough of a lubricant to prevent seizure of the bolt. And I've been reading where it is said it won't. Anyway I ended up not ordering the aluminum bolts from from Spiegler. I just didn't want to have order through the local shop here. (They often seem put out when I try to buy parts for such an old bike.) The ones I did order are from Venhill. Right now I guess I can't say whether or not these are aluminum or steel. I know they sell both and these didn't specificly say aluminum. I'll keep in mind what you've said. But since I already bought them maybe we can all learn something at my expense. When they arrive I'll play around with them and see where I end up. Hear are the links to what I bought:

You should be OK. In the first place, electro-deposited finish is USUALLY done to steel, not aluminum. Although, depending on the ignorance of the copy writer, anodizing might be construed as electro deposition. It's not, but thats another subject. The second good sign is that they are hex key heads. (Allen wrench), and anybody that expects to get the torque necessary to seal them using an Allen wrench in an aluminum bolt is daft, or extremely inexperienced, so that would argue for their being steel.
When they get there, try a magnet on them. Titanium isnt magnetic, but the chances of them being that are slim to none, since the copy writer would of been on that fact like flies on poo, and the price would have been doubled.
            Keep us posted, CZ

                Aluminum banjo bolts.

Well I'm feeling better already. Thanks CaptonZap I love this site. I've learned more about these bikes and such in the last five years than in the 31 years I've owned this bike.

WSL91 I looked at the old iron site on your message. Great tractors. Back in the sixties I used to get sent to my aunt and uncles farm in the summer (supposed to keep out of trouble I guess) and they had Ford tractors like those. Fifties or sixties models maybe older. I only remember for sure is one was red and one was blue.

ooops looks like I hijacked my own thread.

Anyway I,m looking forward to getting these lines on.
                Thanks Guys

                  steel they be!

The banjo bolts I ordered from Venhill came yesterday. Seemed pretty quick considering they came from the UK. They are definitely steel they're stuck right here in my magnetic bowl.
