  • Rear Brake Bleed

Right now I have a XJ rear master cylinder on my bike. I have a "rebuilt" xs master I want to put on when I install my braided steel line. The last time I tried installing it I couldn't get it to pump up. I don't have a power bleeder, so what are my options? Also what size speed bleeders do we use?

If you are talking about the bleeder screw itself, Tom, I think it is an 8mm, 1.25 pitch. Take an old one to autozone or advance or something. Unlike Honda, Yahama used an off the shelf size bleeder screw that is readily available at autoparts stores. I use one of those pump up suck the brake fluid $30 brake bleeder tools and regular bleed screws and I have never had a problem pumping up the rear brake. Both screw and pedal are right together. It is easy. Not like the front. Those can be a pain.

Suck the fluid through then use the brake pedal to get the final pressure. If your master won't build pressure you might want to check and make sure you put it together right. Check to spoog hole and the feeder hole to make sure they are clear

Make sure the brake pedal is correctly adjusted according to the FSM, if the plunger is too far in, you will never get it to bleed, JAT, BTDT.

          M/C Bleed

I haven't done that and don't know how. When I tried to get the rear M/C to work the last time I manually filled the plunger cylinder, but no joy.

To "bench bleed" ANY master cyl, do the following:
partially fill the MC with brake fluid.
Hold your finger over the brake line fitting, and push in on the plunger ( I use a screw driver)
let the air out, then seal the MC with your finger when you let the MC return to the "normal" position.
Continue until you have brake fluid at your finger.

              So Thats How It's Done

Thank You Dave. I'm sure the whole process has been posted here somewhere. I may have even seen it, but failed to record it for posterity inside my dimly lit cranium. This whole repairing the brakes, leading to fork seals, leading to turn signal issues, leading to this is getting old. I just want to ride before the summer is over and get started on the other XS11.
