  • Small wire bits stuck to oil drain plug

I put about 100 miles on a restored 82xj11 maxim, today i dicided to swap up to some heavier oil since the temps are suppose to break 100 degrees this week.

I pulled the drain plug and saw that it had four 1/4 to 1/2 inch metal wires stuck to it magnetically.

They look like 20 gauge naked wire but are very stiff and are not easily pliable.

Think if you were to cut a 1/2 inch strand of electrical wire (non copper), strip all of the out plastic rubber insulation off and stick it to a drain plug. It is definitely not metal shaving, and there were no metal shavings that i saw.

    What could this possibly be?

You say it was recently restored. Was any machining done on the motor? Possibly it wasnt cleaned well afterwords?

They wouldn't have come off a wire wheel that might've been used to clean up cases etc??

Are thry straight pieces or arched? Maybe its a few peices of you plug hole thread..? Check you drain hole threads for dmage, it could have been over torqued..?

Cases are aluminum so the threads are too, not magnetic.

I was thinking wire wheel too. Could have been there when they put the plug in and just didn't care to clean it off.

Sorry it took so long to get back, been busy with new job.

The bike hasnt been showing any symptoms.. of anything really. It ran fine before and after i changed the oil.

Im guessing its steel so its not threads of something.

Wire wheel would be a good guess but i cant figure when and what it would have been used for or on.

I did the restore myself. I did nothing to the engine itself, on the tranny.
I had it full of oil and running when i discovered it needed the 2nd gear fix, so with pan off but engine not split, i did the 2nd gear fix, cleaned the pan and threw it back together and now about 100 miles out its got these wire bits.

The best way ive come to describe the wire bits are to take a paper clip and bend it straight and cut it in half length wise. you can tell when looking at a paper clip it was casted/made nearly perfectly round, but the ends have been chopped or broken.

Its very odd but until i change the oil again and find more or start experience some sort of symptoms im not too worried about it.

The closest thing i can figure is that its wire mesh from the oil filter... but i doubt it would just come apart so easily.

Next time you look at the oil pump screen, check it for missing mesh wire. That is the only other possible source that I can think of although I couldnt visualize your description... (It is just me)
