  • Gas Tank Interchangeability

Forgive me if this has been addressed - I thought I saw an interchangeability guide for gas tanks, but I can't find it.

    I have a 1981 XS1100H. I also have access to a tank from a 1979 XS1100. They should swap evenly, right?

Also, my tach is dead. Does anyone know of a replacement model?

    Thanks

Gas tanks interchange with not mods to the tank. The sending unit on the special tank is on.the opposite side of the tank though. The special tanks also use a low fuel light rather than a guage. Also the seat on a special is a bit longer in the front due to the lower rear end of the special tank.

If you are going special to special or standard to standard, then no issues with swaps.

Make sure your charging system is working, the tach gets it's signal from the alternator, might be your problem, JAT

Any standard tank can be used on the H model. The gas gage from the H in earlier tanks will not read conservatively though -- like when it gets to E you will be on reserve.

          Many Thanks

Thanks guys - great to know about the tanks. I am not too worried about the fuel reading, as I have never had a bike with a fuel gauge. Interesting about the tach, too. It has not been holding a charge - that might be my issue. Also, does anyone know the speedo ratio for my bike?

2.93:1.... So there's very few aftermarket speedos that will work. MikesXS has a few, but you have to check carefully for the one or two that actually read right. Most of what he sells is the 'standard' Harley ratio (2:1) and will read way off...
