  • XS Middle Gear

I would like to try to fix my xs 1100 middle gear bearings. There is a clicking sound when I turn the rear wheel by hand in nutural. There is a weering sound in all five gears comming from that location which starts at 30mph. It almost sounds like the gears are not meshing corectly. This sound goes away with less power and when slowing down in any gear or just pulling in the cluch. The question is does the middle gear case come out without unbolting the engine from the frame. The bike has 88700 miles on it. thanks for any help.

Hi John, welcome to the site. I personally have never taken out a middle drive so I have to input on that... Look on ebay for a replacement, they can be had for as little as $15-$30 plus shipping.

When is the last time you changed your gear oil?

If it's making noises it's probably too late. Like WMarshy said they are still quite plentiful on ebay.

The middle drive is really easy to change. Just pull back the boot over the ujoint and theres 4 bolts holding it to the flange of the MD that need to come out then there ar just the 7 allen head bolts that hold it to the case.

Drain the oil first or you'll have a big mess.

Are you sure about that? From what I've seen, the middle gearbox can be removed without draining the oil from it because it's a sealed unit with oil seals on the shafts

You better look again James. With the MD off you can look in and see the gears and the drain plug for it isn't even in the unit itself, it's in the case.

Any repair parts needed (assuming you can still get all of them) will cost more than buying a good used unit....

You also need special tools to work on those, you can't just slap new parts in them. There's a set-up process that has to be followed too.

                Yep, thasafact.
The main outside bearing cost near a hundred dollars, and is hard to find.
The shims are unobtainium, although I have cut some from paint cans, (.010 in). The condition of the gear faces will be the determining factor as to rebuildability.
Download the middle drive manual from Catatoinc Bugs site, and see if you have the tools and expertise to attempt it. BTDT NF (not fun) CZ

The drain plug for the oil us in the lower engine case, rather than the middle drive.

Aah right. My memory's failing me then! No doubt you're correct.

Talking of making a mess..... I changed the oil on my bike. Have a guess.... Yep, I 'filled' it with oil and had forgotten to put the drain plug back in. That comes from working on bikes, tired, at 2am!

If you get a used one, make sure it has not been disassembled. You want a complete unit as it came original.

What are you going to do with your old one? I'm going to explore what it takes to build a chain drive like xsChop was offering and could use a complete unit to take measures from...

Anyone reading this, if you have one of Chops chain drives not yet installed PM me please.
