I don't think there is a full write up on the differences, but there are not that many. Swapping of parts mainly sticks to 78 & 79 (early models), and 80 & 81 (late models) and of course Standard and Special models. I'm sure the guru's will chime in with the very specific details and differnces for you. I am still learning so I will leave it to them.
There is however this link for models and serial numbers with the colors they came in.

That is actually a good guide and gives the nomenclature as well. It really is fairly simple E-H dictates the year startign in 78 through 81. S signifies the Special model, L indicates the Midnight Special model. So an LG is an 80 MNS, and SH is an 81 Special, an F is 79 standard. As GTXS had deliniated.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

Your LG is for all practical purposes just a SG with black/gold trim. All the parts will interchange, with the only 'real' difference being that Yamaha (as a selling point) 'detailed' the frame and some other bits 'better' (more attention paid to weld quality/finish). There's a few other minor differences (seat cover, black carbs) but all of them are cosmetic. The LH had more changes (wheels, brakes, forks), enough that many parts won't interchange.
I've been working up an interchange guide, what I've got done can be found here: http://www.xs11.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=78Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two
'78E original owner - resto project
