  • Petcock rebuild

Hey guys, what is the preferred rebuild kit for the petcocks? I haven't paid attention to those threads before and wonder if there are pitfalls to avoid.

I don't have an answer for you but I do recommend that to make the flat surfaces of the valve smooth. The finish from Yamaha is very hard on the holey gaskets. Flat sand with 600 grit and take the edges off of the hole perimeters. Then shine the surface with Eagle One polish or similar to a mirror finish. This will make the holey gasket last much longer. Usually the holey gaskets are all that you need for reconditioning the petcocks.

LoHo, I see in your signature you have a G Model, but as I recall it is fairly modified. Do you run the Standard tank or Special tank?

I think Georgefix has both kits, I know he has the Special kits, used them a couple times now. For the Standard kits though, I recall that the plunger on the rebuild kits may be just a little shorter than stock and not seal correctly.

That would be Ratbyke. I would ride it to work today, but it will be the Honda 1300ST instead because I have an occupational hearing test tomorrow.

IIRC someone reported that the piston in the kit was 1mm short but they still work if you stretch the spring...

I recently installed 2 kits from Georgefix in the petcocks on a standard tank. The original petcocks were frozen in place. These new rebuilds now do not shut off. Gas flows freely in all lever positions. Another member said that likely the tiny hole in the housing that allows atmospheric pressure to reach the diaphragm is clogged. And to clear it with a tiny drill bit. I never could find this orifice.

Two questions: A) Can this elusive hole be the free flowing culprit?
                B) Can the above- mentioned, millimeter- short push rod be the cause of the vacuum activated diaphragm to not close?

This would almost certainly be the issue. Stretching the spring a little usually fixes the issue, as it just needs to push the thing a little further to get it to seal. I've thought about finding a slightly THICKER o-ring to go on that shaft as I think that would fix it too, but it would be a bit touchy.
