after replacing my 81SH air filter i see theres a square seal at the bottom of the box with a small hole thats open. im not sure if its supposed to be sealed cause inside the air box the hole is outside of the filter so any air isnt filtered thru the hole. i looked it up and its not a very detailed pic. heres a link for the parts #49 seal and #50 cleaner case cap diagram. im missing #50 and if its just a cover for the hole ill just fill it with silicone. thanx

I wouldn't fill it with silicone. I believe the seal allows air/fluid flow one way... ie out of the airbox. So, if the carbs flood, gasoline can drip out. When the engine 'sucks', the seal closes.

I could be wrong about the above and I'm sure that other XSives will correct me if I am. In the meantime, I'd keep the silicone gun in the cupboard!XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. thanx James. any hole in the air box will be air into the intake unless the bikes not running, so if its a drain hole its also an unfiltered air intake. im just not sure. appreciate the response and still not sure. im hoping someone has a SH to see what theirs looks like. i may not be missing #50 cap, it just looks like 1 piece not 2 separate.Last edited by mjpxs11sh; 06-04-2012, 03:47 PM.Max

There's supposed to be a small filter (49) and a snap-on cover (50) for it covering the hole. They commonly get knocked off and lost. That is also the drain for the housing, so just sealing it isn't the best. You could use a small bit of a discarded air filter and tape that over the hole...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

thanx Steve. i must be missing the #50 snap on cover and #49 is a square black plastic piece that has a hole in it without a filter or screen. ill just fabricate a filter and that should take care of it.Max

Yep there is a square shaped piece of filter media, almost looks like steel wool, or cheap funace filter material, that goes in there, and a cover to keep it getting sucked into the engine.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
