  • Changing Valve stem by cheating

My rear valve stem has been leaking since I painted the rims. I took the lock nuts off to tape around the core and the seal broke and its been a slow leaker since

I've been dreading pulling the wheel tire back off. Don't want to dismount it as it has 40%-50% tread left and don't want to re-mount that on my Highway ridin bike. Finally decided that it's coming apart and the old tire goes to the XS which will probably never leave town and a new one goes on here. Ordered up a set of Shinkos so if I changed my mind they would go on the XS as it needs tires anyway and with 2 tires (front and back) had free shipping.

Then it hit me, what if I could break the bead on the bike without pulling the wheel? Tire can stay, I don't have to run to my storage unit and get my tire bead breaker and wheel balancer, don't have to dismount the tire, etc. Etc.

It took a couple bites with a c-clamp and a wood block moving along the tire. Placed the bike in gear to help. I blocked 1 side so that it would only come off on one side. This turned out to be a 30 minute job, not 2+ hours. Found a bunch of aluminum corrosion under the stem. The rim cleaned up just fine and I installed a new stem which it probably needed anyway.

Looks like the XS gets the matching set of Shinkos

The last time I had a leaker like that. The rubber seals around the stem were shot. I picked up a couple rubber washers from the hardware store and it was good as new after that...

What stem did you replace it with, do you have a link for them? My front is starting to do the same. I tightened it and it helped but still leaks every so slowly... IIRC There use to be a thread that I read a while ago that someone installed some aftermarket aluminum replacement stems and had to clean up the rim because there was a grove where the o-ring goes...

When I did the one on my bike, I couldn't find a replacement anywhere around town and I didn't want to wait. The metal part was OK so I put in a new valve core (free at a tire shop) and new rubber washers from the local hardware store.

I think it cost less than a buck but I probably burnt up 10 bucks worth of gas in my truck running around looking for a replacement.
