  • Front Brakes

I was pulling my front wheel off today to take it in for a new tube. During this process I notice my right front pads didn't have the steel clip on the upward side like my left side pads did. Obviously it isn't necessary for safety since I haven't had a problem in four years, BUT I believe that was the source of a faint ticking noise I had in the front end. Any idea where/if I could find one of the clips?

    Thanks!

You are a little vague on which piece you need. Does it attach to the pad or the fork leg? Which model bike do you have, a Standard, Special, or Maxim?

      Bike's an SG.

It's a spring clip that attaches directly to the top side of both pads, one piece that just snaps over them. Kind of looks like a square 'U' with a camel hump for the top facing edge of each brake pad end to snap into, opposite the pinned-in 'guided' ends facing the ground when installed. I think it's job is mainly to align the pads on the top side.

I'll try to link a picture in a little later to give a better idear.

        http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Ya...PER/parts.html

Seen in the chart as 10-22.

It is unavailable for purchase as far as I can find. It's called a 'caliper retainer.'

It's not critical, but if any of you have a small collection of parts and you'd be willing to part with it I'd happily purchase it from you. The ticking just bugs me. My bike is sharp and clean, I just like it to reflect that all the way around. I'm such an old lady when it comes to this bike.

That's actually more important than you think; that clip is there for the pads to bear against when you apply the brakes. If it's missing, they will contact the fork and will wear grooves in the soft aluminum. This will prevent free movement of the caliper, particularly when you replace pads....

Some have fabricated these out of sheet metal, don't use aluminum, mild steel will work, but some stiff stainless like OEM is best.

Steve, thanks for the education. That makes sense because the rotation of the wheel would throw the brake pads into the fork.

Phil, thanks for the parts source. I'm going to peruse that site! XSives to the rescue, as usual!
