    Carbs gushing...... needle valves ????

    Hi once I found some threads about gushing carbs and now I can't find them so here it goes again. My carbs won't stop the flow of fuel and there seems to be no reason. It's the old carbs but everything seems to be fine. When I tip them upside down I can't blow into them and the needle valves seal very well then. The float level is ok. #@$@^$#%$@!!!


    Floats are in perfect condition and move freely and I cleaned the needle valves and seats but still same crap.

      With the old type carbs make sure that the vent t's aren't clogged in some way. In at least one case it was found that the fuel and vent t's were swapped which caused the vents to be plugged and the carbs to overflow. So check for proper venting, cause that's what it sounds like it happening.

        If you have the original carbs, these have steel float needles and brass seats. These are less tolerant of 'issues' compared to the later rubber-tipped valves, so it can only be a few things....

        1. Worn valves/seats.
        2. Contamination of the fuel supply.
        3. Bad gasket between the carb body and the valve seat.
        4. Incorrect float height.
        5. Cracked carb body.

        My bet would be on 1, 2, or 4.

        For 1, you can sometimes 'polish' the valve tip and seat if it's marginal and bring them back. Try some metal polish on a q-tip.

        For 2, make sure your tank is clean and if the carbs haven't been fully disassembled and cleaned, do so. Inadaquate cleaning is a leading cause of carb problems... look here:

          it was the vents

          It was the vents I was a dum dum and stuck bolts in them for some unknown reason thanks much.
