  • '78 Standard Heat Shield

I am wondering if anyone has ever cut the heat shield off of the standard exhaust and then reattatched it with brazed on nuts and bolts?

I am cleaning up the rust on my pipes and I really don't want to leave the rust that is under there when I am getting rid of all the rest of it.

Rather a lot of trouble... I'd grind the welds off, do the cleaning, paint everything with high-heat paint, then weld them back on. You would have to re-shape the shields to reinstall them with bolts.

What I was thinking was to leave the shield connected to its bracket and out the bracket off of the collector. Then and manipulation that I needed to do I could do to the bracket rather than the shield. Even the holes would be in the bracket.

Have done it several times on the later model shields that bolt on Nate. Replaced the bad threaded piece with a stainless nut spot welding them in a couple spots on the pipe. If you had a couple later shields you could easily index hole locations and do the same, or looking at the later ones would imagine you can similarly locate holes in shield. Have done what your asking using my wire-feed. Hope that helps...
