I just finished restoring a 82 maxim 1100, doing the dremel fix and total tank restoration and conditioning.

I feel like I could conquer another, in this case just to resell.

My 82 was $200 to buy and another $700 to get it finished doing all labor myself.

If there are no major engine overhaul required for this bike and all the legal checks out, do you think it would be a great next project?

Would this model also require a 2nd gear fix like my 82?

It would be worth it for parts for sure but with no papers its hard to tell if it could be got legal. I would buy it.

I'd contact him, get the VIN # and call or check with Police for stolen reports! If not stolen, then you might be able to get replacement title, but varies from state to state! YMMV! But yes, for parts alone, it looks worth it, heck, 82 TCI, seat, pipes, tank, engine, rims, etc!!!!

PS....it just says MAXIM, not 1100! They made lots of smaller engine MAXIMs with drive shaft..that seat looks like a 650 Maxim or such!

it's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like it'a an 85/86 XJ700 maxim. For $100 you could make that back easily if you parted it out. To get it back to being road worthy it could take about $800. They can sell for $1500 or so depending on area and quality of build. I would have in my garage if it was in my area.

Good website BUT it is compiled by insurance companies and only records stolen vehicles that were reported to the insurance company. So if the vehicle had no insurance or had liability only and was not reported to the Insurance company then there is no record of it in that database. People are much more likely to report to the police if their vehicle is stolen.

Now I am not saying to not use that website, just saying that It does not replace having the police check the vin.

Was a guy near me had one for sale, no title. Said it was a quick easy process to get one. I asked for the vin to check it, he refused to give me the vin saying I could then go get a title for it and he would be screwed.

Now, I do not think the process is THAT simple, and I put zero trust it that person. However, just some food for thought.

i have 2 81s. one has 17 digits the other doesn't. when going with a new insurance company they told me they just add zeros to the end of the vin to make it work in their system..

Looks just like my 82 xj650. U can see on the pic where our 11s middle drive is, it has a flat, elongated cover, like a 650.550s were chain drive, so u know its bigger than that.

In Ca it can take jumping through some hoops and you can end up with a salvage title in some cases, but if not stolen you can almost always register a vehicle with no papers in Ca if your willing to jump through the hoops to do it. They will want to know to the best of your knowledge where it's been over the years, but they also know there will be blank spots in that history most of the time. And being that the owner is a towing company might make it simpler, it often does.

We have arrived at the point where the Secretary of State Police have determined the process for how to get one for my particular problem. It involves the seller applying for a lost title, the last seller paying fees, someone is doing a power of attorney statement and I'm supposed to surrender the wrong title and pay for a new one. My guess is I'm still at least 4 weeks out if everything goes right. If there is no title and/or the #'s don't match don't bother.

It depends completely on the state the bike is in. In some states it's completely impossible to title a bike without papers, in others it's very expensive and drawn out and in some it's not too overly difficult but does require jumping through some hoops and in some states its almost trivial for vehicles the age of our bikes. Ca amazingly falls into the middle, with it being possible if your willing to do some legwork and jump through some hoops. I think it has a LOT to do with the classic car culture in the state, so there is a LOT of drive to keep it possible to bring classic vehicles back to life that are likely to not have any paperwork in existence anymore.
