  • UK Gold cleaning fluid

    Hi Folks

I responded in a recent thread asking what people clean their bikes with. I mentioned that I use a product called UK Gold. This was developed by my step-father and has been available in the UK for about 20 years or so. He and my mother have a chemical and paint company here in the UK. So far, it's only been sold here to industry, not retail.

Several people have PM'd me about the nature of this product, costs and what it would cost to ship to to other countries. Here's a bit of info and shipping costs to the USA and Canada. Australia costs a bit more on shipping and Europe a bit less.....

UK Gold is a non-caustic, non-acidic, non-alkali cleaning fluid which can be used neat for very heavy applications, or up to dilutions of 120-1 with water. The product is an extremely powerful degreaser/cleaner which is classed as non-hazardous but which must be used with caution, following information on the accompanying data sheet.

I've checked at the post office today for the rate to send 500ml of UK Gold to the USA by small packet rate, airmail.

The product itself, in a screw top plastic bottle which would need you to decant/dilute into a trigger spray of your own (eg any cleaner spray bottle), would cost $18. Postage would cost $12.

UK Gold can be used in dilutions up to 120-1 with water, depending on the use to which it is put. For general bike washing, higher dilutions are better. For removal of grease, oil and ingrained filth, 4 parts water to 1 UK Gold is fine. So the 500ml will make at least 2 litres of extremely strong cleaner and anything up to 60 litres of general purpose cleaner. It can be used by putting a couple of capsful into a bucket of water, for bike/car washing.

I use this product all the time on virtually everything and have done so for years. It's non-caustic, non-acidic or alkali. It washes off with water. I use it on PVC window frames, alloy, steel, painted surfaces, my car (inside and out). I always use it prior to galvanising metal parts with my zinc-plating kit. It really is an excellent product and, in my opinion, well worth using. I've sprayed an XS1100 cylinder head with it and actually watched the ingrained oil drip off the head. I've used it to degrease parts when doing an engine rebuild. I clean my house and floors with it! I've used it to degrease chains (not applicable for our XS's of course), remove tea stains from porcelain (or coffee stains for y'all ). Recently I used the product in 4-1 to remove fat from a cooker extractor hood filter and the person I did it for thought I'd gone and bought a new one.

So, there you have it folks. If anyone wants to buy any of this product, just let me know.

Yes, Paypal is best. Airmail small packet is good for up to 2kg, so it would be possible to send 3 bottles of product in one package and would work out cheaper. I can ask at the PO if you want. Maybe try the product first before ordering 3?

                First use

So far James I say "Bully"!

Mixed up 0.5 oz in 32oz and sprayed onto grimy frame...clean and shiny underneath.

I will test it a little stronger as a degreaser on the engine.

Hi John. That's a good mix for general cleaning. Try 6 to 1 as a really strong engine degreaser... you'll be able to watch the oil and grease just drip off. I sometimes put an old white towel underneath just to see how much filth comes off!

I'mpleased it arrived OK, with your wheel bearing.

                  Have fun....

                          Hi James,
28th June and it's here in Saskatoon already, stuff mailed from Calgary takes longer than that!
Gotta go buy a squirt bottle so I can make a 5/1 mix to try it out on my really crudded-up engine.
Spritz it on, scrub with an old paintbrush and hose it off, right?
                          Thanks,

                            Hi Fred.

Great! It arrived. I would mix up 4 to 1 and spray onto the engine. Then use a stiff brush like a toothbrush or a brass suede brush depending on the surface. Scrub it in and let it soak in. Then maybe another generous squirt and maybe a brush then just hose off with water. How much you do the scrub bit really depends on how thick the gunge is. Normally, I just spray it on, brush it and wash it off.

You can use the product in the chemical tank of a pressure washer. I do this for removing oil from concrete and block paving.

                            Have fun!
