  • European Seating vs. Standard Seating

    Hi all!

I was just wondering if anyone has some pictures on file which clearly show the differences in riding position between the european XS1100 SH to the standard XS1100 SH.

I understand that both the bars and foot pegs/pedals are engineered differently between the two types of bikes.

    Regards,
    Adam

You're trying to compare apples and oranges...

First, the SH was only sold in North America, so there isn't any 'euro' version. They never got the 'Special' bikes, only 'standards' except for a somewhat 'similar' (and rare) 'Sport' version sold for one year only. Hate to try to find those parts....

The 'euro' footpegs relocate the forward pegs up several inches and back about three inches (roughly). Different pegs, peg mounts, brake pedal and shifter (including the engine cover) are required. If you have a '78-80 US-spec standard, it is possible to swap the 'standard euro' parts onto the bike; a member here has done this (parts ran him about $150 out of England). If you have a Special or '81 standard, these parts won't fit (due to frame differences). These would probably need the 'Sport' parts, but it's unknown if they would actually swap onto the US-spec bikes....

Yamaha also sold the 'RH' bike (similar to the euro 'Sport') in Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, etc) at the same time as the Sport. This does share some parts with the 'Sport' model, so that may be a possibility. But again, it's a pretty rare model and finding the bits won't be easy...
Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

'78E original owner - resto project
    '78E ???? owner - Modder project FJ forks, 4-piston calipers F/R, 160/80-16 rear tire
    '82 XJ rebuild project
    '80SG restified, red SOLD
    '79F parts...
    '81H more parts...

    Other current bikes:
    '93 XL1200 Anniversary Sportster 85RWHP
    '86 XL883/1200 Chopper
    '82 XL1000 w/1450cc Buell, Baker 6-speed, in-progress project
Cage: '13 Mustang GT/CS with a few 'custom' touches
    Yep, can't leave nuthin' alone...

The 5K7 Sport uses a variation of the Special frame, but essentially around the swing arm/footrest area its the same, the aluminium footrest brackets on a Sport are black but apart from that they are the same as XJ1100s and Specials (if they have the cast-in detailing lines)

The footrests are different a lot, they are mounted a lot further back, and the brake lever is a whole lot shorter and the gear lever is rearset type i.e. linked.

Heres some pics of my Sport, sorry they don't show the footrests and barke lever too well

He got them from me.... or rather I found them all for him and sent them over to the USA.....I hear they have been installed this week! He also got a lovely set of Euro handlebars to complete the picture...

You have to be careful with the different frames, the pictures James has posted are all parts for a 2H9 or 2H7, most of which will not fit the SH, where as the 5K7 Sport footrests and aluminium brackets will fit.

As Steve says, "You're trying to compare apples and oranges..."

              .
You're correct. The 2H9 and the 2H7 are very similar and all the bits in the pix I posted are from a 2H9. From what I understand, the USA got far more models than we did...... confusing for you when it comes to spares...

Confusing indeed James! Thank you for the pictures!

Well, I think I'll start with the Euro bars and go from there. Although the buckhorns work for some, I don't think I'll be comfortable with that angle of attack.

Haha, I have a feel the 5K7 bars will be tough to come by! But what makes them so adjustable?

They're in 3 pieces, the middle section clamped to the top tree, the 2 outers are on splines, they can be moved around at different angle positions then a pinch bolt clamps them in place like a gear lever idea.

You can see them in this video a little.
