    Hello All,
My new (to me) 1979 Special was dropped off yesterday. I got it from Ole's Classic Cycle and it is awesome. I have re-built several Yamahas and Hondas in the past and know the amount of time and effort it took him to build this machine. I have only been able to put about 50 miles on it so far, but will do more this weekend.

I have been lurking on this sight and am looking forward to continuing to learn about these bikes from you guys. Safe Riding!

Welcome to the site. If you've got the free time, the XSEast rally is next weekend in SE Ohio. Maybe you could join up with them and meet some faces. Check the rally pages.

Unfortunately, It's a little too far away for me and the funds are a little low, otherwise I would love to go.

Edit: PS. We love pics! (get a photobucket account and if you've got an android phone you can get the photobucket app and it automatically uploads your pics, then all you've got to do then is post the pic link to the thread and poof! done!)

Another edit: in your signature put your bike info, so that way anytime you post something, the readers know about what you have.

Oh and I forgot to add, in the members forum, there's a sub forum up top that you can put your location in so others in the area can find you.

Also there's a ZeeMap that has flags/pins for members to post their locations too. http://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=153721

It's always nice to know if there's another fellow XSive around the corner (or in the next county) you can count on for assistance.

You have to copy and paste the IMG code. The second one from the bottom in the dropdown that appears when you hover your cursor over the pic.

                        Hey there,

Great looking machine! Just a few notes, the handlebars are not OEM... thankfully because the OEM Special "rototiller" style bars have been a pain in most folks wrists. You'll note that the master cylinder reservoir appears a bit tilted, and that's because it was designed for the more extreme angle of the special bars. It will work just fine in that position as long as you keep it well topped off with brake fluid....will just need to turn the bars to get the reservoir level before opening!

Secondly, the tires are DUNLOP which are a good brand, but they are the lesser quality version D404 series vs the Elite II and now Elite 3. A review of it's specs will show that it is not rated for as much weight capacity, and therefore, they can wear out faster, so notate your starting mileage. 3-4 k miles will be about what you may expect from the rear. A search for tire threads will reveal lots of info regarding other brands/models that have recently come into favor with the membership. The Elite 3's seem to have possibly either reduced their quality, or softened their compound because they have been reported to not be lasting the 8k miles that they have been known to last previously!

Welcome to the madness, ride safe, have fun, and enjoy!

Welcome. Nice looking bike. The Dunlop 404 is an decent tire that will do most things just fine. If you can join us you will be made welcome in Cambridge. XSEast Rally page here http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34651

Thanks to all for the comments. I know the handlebars are not original and the pipes are aftermarket Macs. I will probably be going to a higher bar, I'm getting too old to crouch over gas tanks for extended periods. I will be keeping the Dunlops till they wear out, then will be looking for additional advice.

I would love to meet some of you in Cambridge. Will have to check my schedule, grandkid little league games are taking precedence right now.
