  • New Bar Switch Assemblies

Is there a good source for new bar switch assemblies? Mine are worn out (visually that is, functionally they work) and want the look of new ones.

MikeXS has them for the 650s, but not these monsters.

    Thanks!

Take your assemblies off of the bike. Clean all of the electrical contacts with contact cleaner. Remove the labels and prep for paint. Paint them with this:

    You want the satin finish.

When finished, replace the labels with new ones.

    Reproduction Decals

Mike's XS switches will work, but you'll have to repin the plugs to the proper circuits.

Some before and after pics would be cool.

        George,

My camera is MIA and there are no before photos. My daughter and I are doing a restoration of a XS650SH. The switchgear are painted and look as new. The decals have not yet been applied. The paint I described above looks the perfect match to me. Choose the satin finish.

The 650 switches are the same but you have to change the plugs on them to fit the 1100.

If I'm not mistaken, the 650 switches don't have the hazard switch on the bottom of the left control, so Yes, you can use it, but then one feature would be disabled. (plus the wiring would of course need to be correct too.)

George, you are correct. No XS650 has hazard lights and therefore, no switch.

Since he's got an E it won't have the flasher feature anyway. That didn't appear until 80.

If you use Mike's Part #24-2059, it should work if you're willing to rearrange the wires in the plug as it's possible that the plugs are the same. I believe you can release the pins with a small pick.

I guess I was half right.
Learned something new today. (only the 80/81's have hazards)

If you don't learn something new each day, then you're not living.

I hope no one minds me reviving this long since dead thread, but I have some questions that couldn’t have in a better thread than this.

Preface: I’ve tried to reach out to Mike’s XS regard the cross compatibility of the switches (xs650 to xs11) within the last week and never really heard back from them.
                      1. Does anyone know of an online store that sells OEM(ish) switches for the xs11 specifically?
                      2. Does anyone know of any aftermarket controls that will just plug and play with the xs11?
                      3. Can anyone verify that changing the switch assembly plugs will work with both the left and right assemblies?

As a point of reference the following are the parts I'm looking to purchase:

                      http://www.mikesxs.net/product/24-2060.html
                      http://www.mikesxs.net/product/24-2058.html

                      Thanks in advance.

That's as close as you're going to get for new replacement handlebar controls unless you luck into some NOS units specifically for a XS11 (probably big $$$ if you do).

These are essentially identical to the OEM 78-79 switches. The right switch assembly lacks the 'headlight' switch your '78 features (which Yamaha deleted on all XS11 models in mid-79 anyway) but it's not needed in any case.

Yes, you'll have to reconfigure the connecting plugs, but that's not that big a deal. I'll also note that unless your existing switches are trashed (broken/certain missing parts), they can be rebuilt with some patience. New horn/starter buttons and their springs are available, if the rest is there it can be fixed.
