  • Puzzled by Electrical Issue

HEY guys, it's been a while since i've been on here! However, i have an electrical issue and was hoping for some advice.

I changed the battery in my 1980 XS1100 Special and now have no tach, no signal lights or brake lights?

All else seems fine. i have running lights, emergency flashers, headlight and speedo and tach are lit up as well.

Any help would be appreciated. All fuses are intact.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I know you said fuses are intact, but make sure the fuse mounts are in good shape too. Check all connections near the battery, take them all apart and put them together after checking for corrosion or loose connectors.

Double check fuses with a meter too.

Thanks, I think I'll pull the battery back out and retrace my steps and also check what wires I may have moved or loosened when i did it. I was thinking that there must be a common wire or connector or fuse that was related to all of the lights and tach that are affected that I somehow may have disconnected.

Thanks for your advice. I appreciate it.

Like was stated, check all the connectors. Particularly the ones the battery bumps up against behind the fuse panel.

Also check all the connections on your fuses. Especially if you have a stock fuse panel.

Reading the manaul and looking at the wiring diagram:
In the 4-fuse panel. the taillight fuse (10A) is located on the left-hand side of the panel: continuing from left to right are the headlight (10A), turn signal (20A) and ignition (10A).

Given your symptoms, No brake lights, no tach, no blilnkers, I've traced the circuit to the 20 amp turn signal fuse (it the one that goes from tan wire to tan wire and is probably one of the bigger gage wires.)
If that fuse blew, then you'd have no: tach, turn signals, neutral light, high beam, fuel low, brake lights, oil warning light, and no horn.

The speedo/tach/running lights get power from the headlight circuit (10A), the hazards come off the main fuse

If you have the crappy old glass fuses they can look good, and show continuity but still not work well enough to pass full current when in use.

I would suggest ditching the glass fuse panel if you still have it. Pm TC and get one of his.

Nate, He might not know who TC is so you'll have to spell it out for him.
TopCatGr58 sells fuse blocks with the crimp connectors.
Here's a pic with mine hooked up.
