  • Winter Project Basically Done

Finally put the bike back on the road this weekend after messing about with all the little stuff over the winter:

    Installed new tires (Shinko Tourmasters)
    New stainless brake lines (Galfer)
    Greased rear drive splines
Refurbished front and back master cylinders
New exhaust headers & mufflers (stock, thanks Andreas!)
Polished all chrome & aluminum (this took forever!)
Painted all the black bits - frame, saddle bags, rims, calipers, rear drive, side covers, etc., etc.
    Cleaned all electrical connections
Changed all fluids - oil, middle & rear drives, brakes
New gaskets under all the aluminum bits I took off for polishing
    New air and oil filters
Refurbished top of forks so that they now hold air pressure

    Still to do:
    Fork brace
    Paint tank
    Overhaul 8-track

Great day for a cruise on Sunday - 28 deg. C (about 82F), sunshine, blue skies and the bike ran like a top. So much for mowing the lawn!
    1980 XS 1100 Special
    Mostly stock & original
    Added Yamaha fairing (w/ 8-track!)
    Torpedo bags
    New paint (still) pending
    Stainless brake lines
    Tkat forkbrace
    Coils from Honda 1000

    Previous bikes:
    1968(?) 350 Harley Davidson
    1977 Yamaha 650

    Overhaul 8-track
You must cruise a lot of yard sales looking for 8 track tapes to play in that thing!

Only some of us older guys might even know what an 8-track player is.
I think you need to post up a pic so our younger riders can see a bit of history.

Man I'm feeling old right now.

Stored next to your saddle and wagon wheel tools? Sorry Steve, did they have horses back then?

Still have those too... There's a Teac 1020 and a Revox A77 next to the 8-track in the closet, along with an Advent 100A dolby unit. Also have a DAT deck (another dead format).

I still pull one of the reel decks out once in a while, I've still got some not-transferred-to-CD-yet unreleased live concerts to transcribe.... no hurry....

Forgot to add that I also installed a new fuse box. PO had replaced the glass fuses but simply left the new fuse holders dangling in the breeze. Also installed some Ride-On in the new tires. So far I like it
