  • Speedometer drive question

My SF came with a non-working speedometer. I took the cable loose, taped it to the handlebars and went for a ride, no movement. Pulled the cable out and it was not broke.

Installed a used thought to be good drive unit and still no go. I checked the cable again and it rotates when I back up but not going forward. I checked the tabbed piece on the wheel when the wheel was out and it doesn't rotate in the wheel. There's nothing else I'm missing right?
Think I need another drive unit.

Take the drive off and disassemble it. They are pretty simple. You'll be able to tell if something is wrong in there.

Also, make sure the square drive end of the cable is good and not rounded. You should be able to pull the cable all the way out of the sheath from the speedometer end and inspect and lube it.

The drive should have two tabs that fit into two notches in the wheel.
Check that they are engaged. the tabs are not sturdy and could have been bent or otherwise damaged so they don't engage.

          Hi Greg,
then he should check it again. Those things should either drive both ways or not at all.

I looked at the drive tangs and they were not bent. The part they engage appears to be a ring with 2 slots so even if 1 were bent over it should still drive (unless I'm wrong). I quickly grabbed them and tried to rotate in the wheel and they did not however I was confident that I had a bad drive at the time so I didn't spend a lot of time looking at them. I went to grease the front wheel bearings and there is a spacer between the bearings on this wheel that I don't remember on the XJ so I was unable to work any grease into the bearings. The bearings were smooth and from feel felt like the grease was not dried out yet.

I've had this speedo cable out and the end is square and you can't spin it by hand when engaged with the drive (could on the old one). Perhaps the leading edges on the gears are rounded off from going forward and the backside are not??. The one thing that seems missing is a spacer or something to keep the inner cable down in the outer cable unless the speedo itself does that.. I'll have to review the cable I took out (have 2 cables) Of course I have to pull the drive out again which is a pain as the bike has a Kerker and I have to add a center stand long enough to work on it then pull it back off. I have another drive coming from a eBay seller with 100% feedback and the drive is supposed to be tested (I know, whats that really mean). While apart again I will give everything a very thorough inspection but I don't think its that complicated. The Kerker is likely going away soon and I'll have a center stand back on this one. I like center stands.

When I do this next time while there is a jack under the motor and the bike is on the center stand I'll rotate the front wheel assembly and check for cable rotation. I could have done this yesterday but if I had a dollar for every could have/should have................................Thanks for the advice I appreciate it.

Yeah, I had a Kerker on the okieSPECIAL when I first got it. It sounded cool but it was a pita to do ANYTHING. Got tired of dropping the exhaust just to change the oil.

So you changed the oil filter ?????? The guy I bought mine said yea you gotta drop the exhaust to get to the oil filter (which I already knew) then he said, "might want to change the filter, it's been a while"

In my opinion the filter needs to be changed at EVERY oil change. If you don't it's kinda like putting clean pants on over dirty underwear.

                    Fixed

                    Pulled the front wheel again.
Tangs in speedo drive not floating check
Old speedo drive not working....um yes it does...... WTH?

I found it. The drive tang piece had been bent backwards into the left front wheel bearing and the tangs bent out to where they didn't engage the speedo drive anymore. When I assembled it last I thought I was lucky at getting the tangs lined up first try.

All I can figure is that someone before me installed the font axle ass'y and didn't get the tangs lined up on the speedo drive and Gorrila'd the axle nut down until it all pulled together. I believe the speedo drive is supposed to bottom out against the wheel bearing effectively acting as a spacer on the left side. Once I straitened out the drive piece and put it all back together it works like a champ. I took a picture but the problem is not really evident in the photo

I believe this is called being "POed"... IF he said the filter "should" be changed, it WAS a clue... Glad you found the problem.
