  • Exhaust mods?

I've got an unmolested 79XSSF. I would love to to get a richer deeper sound. What can i do?

If your smart you will leave it completely alone. The stock exhaust is bar none the best available for these bikes and if you attempt to modify one you will loose performance.
If you are bent on getting it louder etc send me your info and maybe we can swap some I have here. i would love to have a stock system in great shape myself.

Well, I can certainly live with the quietness. I considered drilling the baffles, which was met with serious outcry. I prefer to keep the performance, but will consider your offer if I do start modding. The bars are a bit pitted and not so comfortable. Is there another I could swap for without changing cables? I've got a 1200 mile trip in less than a week, so I'd prefer an easy swap.

          Hi CW,
a bar can be swapped out for any bar that's shorter &/or lower without having to change cables.

I dont know about Specials but the mufflers on my 79F are removable. One could simply try out some aftermarket mufflers with fabricated mounting brackets. If you dont like the result- put the stockers back on. Just a note- the OEM system uses a crossover pipe. I have a brand spanking new and wonderful looking set of Harley Davidson mufflers. They were on a bike for about 2 minutes. I paid $20 for the pair. I may try them out on my 1100 this summer.

Steve just recently posted a thread on identifying stock exhaust. I believe all of the stock systems came with the no 1 and 4 headers welded to the collectors as well as the mufflers welded to the collectors (except on the XJ).

IF you for some reason have a problem with a muffler, you can cut it off and then use some slip-ons on the collector. I have slip-ons on mine. More than a few folks have stated that the Harley mufflers fit and sound decent.

My first SH had stock exhaust with about 6 1/4" holes drilled in the end baffles. Did give it a bit throatier sound.

only the XJ had removable muffler. All the xs's had welded on muffler.
