  • speedo question

so i am finally able to get the bike on the road (carbs need to be tuned and possibly rejetted) and at least test it out a little bit. i noticed the speedo didn't get up to the speed i was going and when i slowed down, the speedo stayed up for a bit. my question is, where do you think the problem is? the sensor on the wheel? the cable? or the speedo itself? thanks in advance guys.
1979 xs special, just finished the top end rebuild and then i still have lots of work.
    progress thus far...

The grease in the speedo has gotten dried and such. Do a search in this forum, have read of folks spraying stuff into the speedo to clean and loosen up the old grease, but can be a problem if you spray in the wrong place. I can't recall the exact details, but the speedos and tachs are sealed and a PITA to take apart and put back together!

Best idea is just ride it. It will usually loosen up after some use.

I would definetly take the speedo drive off and clean it as well as pull the speedo cable and clean that and lube it with fresh stuff. That may well take care of it. If the bike has been parked a whike then as BA80 says run it a bit after cleaning the mentioned parts and see what it does.
Any of the speedo's I have taken apart have few areas of concern or anything muh that is serviceable. Sure you can go there but only after you have checked the speedo drive and cable.

I agree about the drive and cable but if the speedo doesn't loosen up after some use your best bet is fleabay for a replacement however those 160MPH special speedometers are getting pretty scarce.

I had the same problem and went for my first "real ride" and looked down and noticed the speedo was working right. It probably didnt take 10 miles and it started resonding right. It was slow to get to the mph I was going but was right when there and slow to go down but all is good now after the ride.
