So I just went out and looked at my shifter side...forks..in second gear supposed to be lined up..well mine wasn't..off by a bit looked at the post sent to me about torsion spring and service man..states both marks should be lined up in second..mine weren't ...so adjusted and put torsion spring in..the right way for sure..shifted through all gears by foot on shifter very carefully not secured...rotated tire by hand and used hand clutch..got all gears...went up and down twice by hand...sounds fine...I dunno.could that have been it...that clutch fork alignment?

Agree with BA80...........U got tranny issues........the normal ones that will cause related issues.........mis-aligned marks is a good place to start........

Misaligned marks meaning since I fixed that it is fixed or need to go deeper?

Slow down there sunshine.........one thing at a time. If your sure the middle drive and final drive are at proper lube levels, take it out and shift thru the gears a few times.

I agree it sounds more like the gear problem.
+1 on that. I am having a hard time following exactly what is going down here. The whole shifting by itself thing does not make a lick of sense to me.
Shift pawls and clutch adjustments and every thing else aside the whole "it shifts by itself" does not compute.

I would say to go ahead and start it up and see if it does the shifting on its own thing again. You found a problem and fixed it. See if that was THE problem.

I know, you guys are right, i get a bit excited and flustered about this thing. Learning a lot, but is overwhelming sometimes. So last night i took the night off from the bike and went fishing. Not one bite, but that was fine just needed some relaxing from the xs. So you guys are right about taking it back out again for a test ride. See if the same problems come back or if it is fixed ...i dunno gonna need new side gasket now before i do that or do you fellas think rtv would be appropriate here?..im gonna pull carbs...recheck my float heights again...gotta stop the trickle out of one...maybe o-ring too...my girl aka "boss" isn't too happy the fumes that have come out of this project..oops...i say gotta learn somehow....thanks again guys for your time and wisdom...i would have hit a wall awhile back otherwise

RTV works fine for that gasket as long as everything is clean. If you have o rings on the float seats then yes just change them all out and save yourself the hassle of pulling them.later to change them.

I tend to use RTV for the shift cover anyway. I have found the paper gaskets are hard to get to seal on that bottom edge, and are a total PITA to scrape off if you need to go back in there later. Some folks will tell you the only gasket you can not use the RTV for is the head gasket, and it is true. I like to use the paper gaskets for most applications, but the valve cover and the shift fork cover I use RTV on every time.

Those are machined surfaces. A thin film of high-temp grey is whats on mine, both the shift cover, clutch cover and pan. That was 4+yrs. ago and still not so much as a damp spot. Still have all those gaskets new in thier packages and never have used them......yet.

                                Still fighting

Well i just got my carbs back after being synched and jetted and they work great!!...no leaks anymore either..but bike is still acting up..for starters when i go to put it in 1st grinds in even with clutch pulled in..goes in but slams hard...then when i release the clutch it seems to be engaging and disengaging..but is jumping out of gears on its own and is hard for me to shift at all while moving...come to a stop and get natural again ok...im at a loss..this is the only part of the bike that has not been rebuilt...clutch was but not by a pro...was really hoping to ride this summer..doesn't look to good..any input would be much appreciated
                                thanks
