  • Left side cover

Hey, guys. When I got my 1980 XS1100 G, it had both side covers, but the left one was busted on the bottom where it attaches to the bike. The previous owner had drilled a hole and zip-tied it to the frame. Well, replacing the battery, i cut it and never replaced it. And on a ride, I lost it. I just got a replacement with the bottom piece in tact. I put the sidecover on and snapped the bottom bracket into place. My question is how do you get the cover off once its snapped in? I noticed a cylindrical piece to the bottom left of the cover with a round black cover that swings out to cover the end. It almost looks like you use a key or something to release it? I poked a small flat screwdriver in the slot and turned it but did nothing. The owners manual I have doesn't mention a key to remove the left sidecover. Most of the left sidecovers I saw for sale had the bottom bracket piece busted off, like my original. I think I know why. Any answer to this? I was working on this after work @ 1:30 a.m. this morning, so maybe I missed something.

It should open with the ignition or fuel cap key. The key will only go in about half way.

KEY. It's supposed to open with the key.
The lock mechanism should have a 4 digit code stamped in it. Make sure that code is the same as the code on your ingnition and tank cap.
If it is then you should be good to go, however, it may be severly gunked up with dirt and stuff, so maybe som PB Blaster or other cleaning agent to clean that lock up before you put the key in there and snap it off by twisting too hard.
Also note, the key doesn't go in very far, and once you turn it 90 deg you should be able to gently pull the cover off. (bottom first)

Edit (wow phil is faster than I on the response)

Conor, welcome to the site. I hope you have fun with your new ride.

One more thing to mention, the once the key is inserted, you turn it so the top of the key comes toward you.

I've got a question: where did you get your LEFT side cover? I need one for my 79 standard....
