  • New Battery For The Xs. Odyssey Pc-680mj ???

There is a guy all over eBay right now selling a battery that is supposed to be a direct replacement for the XS.It is made by ODYSSEY, and is the part number PC-680MJ.His listing say's that the MJ stand's for a "metal jacket" and that this is the factory recomendation. They also sell the PC-680 without the "metal jacket".
Anyone ever used this type of a battery? It is a maintanance free, sealed type.It is said to have 680 CCA, and be deep cycleable. The price seem's right @ $54 for the non metal jacket, and $64 for the "full metal jacket".Plus the $12 shipping.I found my old battery frozen in the garage.I havent been able to get out there to work on the"BIG JOHNSON" since it is below zero here.

"The Big Johnson"??? I hope you aren't slamming your bike! Metal jacket battery? Never seen one. I have used gel batteries and they are OK, but I don't believe they last any longer than a wet cell. The bad thing about gel cells is that they crap out they show a normal voltage but will not start the bike.

the hawker is probably the best small non flooded battery on the market. the metal jacket refers to a metal sleeve that the battery sets into. it can be removed with relative ease. the 680 is also used for goldwings and some harleys. used with a maintainer during the off season it should last you 4 to 5 years. cca's are typically not as high but the reserve capacity is better. i recommend purchasing the hawker new from a reputable dealer. they have the best warranty in the cycle business, 2 years free replacement. for more information check out:

i sell the entire hawker line at the batteries plus store i manage, and have never had anyone complain about their products.

anyway thats my battery spill hope it helps

        RE Battery/Big Johnson

Great web site, Daryl. I think I will give one a try.My L/A battery gave up the ghost in the sub zero weather.
"Big Johnson,s" name is not a slam. I got the bike from my friend's son.His name is John. "Big" John's son.

          Batteries

Recently tried the sealed battery route, Yuasa YTX24 and YTX50 were the recommended crossovers. Be careful the XS pulls a lot of cranking amps, neither of these would even turn the bike over.
On closer examination the two had about half the cranking amps as the original. Went back to wet cell $50 Wal-Mart battery works fine. plenty of reserve cranking power, newer machines do not require as many amps to crank as the older ones. By the way am, getting three years out of a Wal-Mart battery.

There is a replacement battery article in the Tech Tips section people may want to look at. Goes over some prices plus pros and cons of sealed batteries vs standards.

In 2002 I went with a Westco sealed 12V22 battery. $75.00 and free shipping. URL is:

              http://www.westcobattery.com/battery...&vid=1&mid=254

After 2 + years it still performs like new. No electrolyte sensor in it, though, which is used by the XJ. There is a work-around for this, also in the Tech Tips section.

No relation to Westco other than a satisfied customer.

                sealed lead

another thing to watch for when purchasing an upgraded battery is which type it is. most cross reference manuals list the ytx24lbs or ytx50 as the sealed high performance version. these are just regular flooded lead acid batteries that are sealed across the to to be maintenance free. the types like the hawker and the 12v 22ah jerry referred to are sealed vrla batteries (valve regulated lead acid) they either come in a true gel or as an agm (absorbed glass matt - which suspends the electrolyte in a cotton fiber) some times also referred to as non-spillable. anyway sorry to ramble about the innards of the batt. i do though encourage everyone to check out the hawker page.
