    OK, here's the problem:
I got my XS in a few boxes, semi-assembled engine and a frame with almost all of the stuff still on it.
As I was starting to assemble the engine, I noticed that the pick-ups were missing (the spring thingie is still on the axle).
The starter motor is also somewhere in starter motor hell (I hope).
If I won't get the stuff, does anybody of u guys have any spare ones on a parts bike or sth?
I'm also looking for the side cover emblems. Since the XS1100 are nowhere to be foung, the XS Eleven should do. They look better anyway.

Off the topic, 1978, european model... what were the factory colors? Mine is black, but I don't think that the paint is original.

I just replaced the camchain, the primary chain (it was almost half an inch longer than the new one and a link in the middle was missing), I also ordered new main bearings for the crankshaft, since the old ones appeared in quite a bad shape. I got new 2nd gear bearings too. The seiyed middle drive bearing are being replaced. Well, the non-seized too... just in case.
The camchain tensioner fell apart... the plastic and the metal bit at least... if they were ever connected. Any problems if I leave it at that? They're still attached at the base, so they slide on eachother.
So, any other engine stuff that fails... since I've got it apart?

a couple a days ago my friend and I disassembled the engine... I ordered new crankshaft bearings and seals. They should arrive next week.
I alredy replaced 2nd gear cogs and shift fork, cleaned the gas tank (almost..) cleaned and degreased the whole engine and shaft drive, assembled the final drive, got all new bearings for the middle drive, got the gaskets for it, and had the clutch done... sbd broke off one of the studs where the springs go when trying to take off the clutch... got a new battery,....
More next time... gotta get some thermal seal... black one.
Eh well... more cash to spend..
BTW: do u guys know of an aftermarket exhaust that looks like an original?
The other option is str8 thru 4 into 4 with 4 akrapovic chimneys in the back (yeah, right...)

OK... a littlebit of help plz... I'm looking for a pic of the pick-up coils... there was one on this page, but I can't locate it again.

              And an update...
went to a friend today, he found the starter motor. Yey!
I also took a steering damper off his hands for 20$ and he threw in a clutch lever from a MG LM. Mine on the XS is a bit bent.
I found an add for a 1979 XS1100 for 2700$, and it says he'll throw in a parts bike. I'm gonna call and ask for the pick-up coil from the parts bike. I called him earlier and I obviously woke him up... at 6pm
              Gonna call him again later.

Called, and it seems that there's a wrong number with that add... hate it when that happens.

Any ideas on how/where to install a steering damper on a 78E?

                  off-site tip, pix

LP, we're getting close, but not 100% of the tips have made it to the forums yet. Here is Ken Talbot's site where you'll find pix that should do.

                    Thanx, Mike...
I got the main crankshaft bearings and oil seals yesterday... set me back another 90$.
Stripped some paint off the gas tank, since there was some rust round the petcocks, and gas was leaking. Did the same to the floater-thingy-assembly. And yep... it was macho maroon some time ago. Black now.
Dissasembled the petcocks, cleaned in diesel and degreased the outer parts... a toothbrush works ok with diesel for getting the gunk off the outside.
Also cleaned the valve cover, which was covered in a sticky plastic glue-like stuff... it came off with a degreaser and some elbow power.
Also cleaned the cylinders, pistons, clutch stuff,....
Took off the coils... and I still don't get it, how ppl can be so stupid... they glued on new wires on old coils... and put a piece of hard wire in there... I guess it worked for awhile, but I just looked at it and it fell apart.
Gonna fix it one of these days. At least the coils were marked where everything goes.
                    Will keep u posted...
I'm still looking for the pick-up coil...

Thanx Bill Kingson! U just earned yourself a beer...
I just did the new wires in old coils fix... it works.
I filed off enough plastic to see the wire with a wood file and cut away all other plastic with a steel saw.... my dad took all other tools with him.
It took me bout 7-10min per coil...

PS: 78E coils are the same as 79...

                        Hi LP
Re: the colours of 1978 euro models - they only had the two. Crystal Silver & Macho Maroon. I always remeber that because I bought my first XS11 in '78 and didn't like the blackcurrant juice coloured one;-)

Thanx mike... it was Crystal Silver... my puny single-cell organism that acts as a brain forgot it in 5 min since talking to the dealer.
My was originally blackcurrant juice coloured one

So, everybody... any ideas on installing a steering damper?

                              Hey there Strom,
Mmmmmm, I vaguely remember my old Yam 305 twin 2 stroker with a knob on the center steering shaft that I could tighten to stiffen the steering for highway type driving, and loosen for urban/city traffic and maneuvering.

However, I'm not sure why you want/need one for your bike??? Is it that the roads are so poor over there that you need to really stiffen up the steering due to severe pot-holes and such??
The only thing I can think of would be to get one or two of those thin damper lift pistons for car hatchbacks/hoods with Eye type mounting holes on both ends, get some sort of clamp that you can attach/bolt to the steering tree and somewhere on the frame below the tank, to allow the movement of these piston/dampeners as you turn the handlebars ?!?!

Will be interested to hear what you come up with, as well as WHY!
