  • Please Help Guys

I had to ask such a stupid question but I've read till I have confused the crap out of myself.

I have an 82 xj1100 and trying to figure out what coils are suppose to be on it? The ones I have now are reading 1.5 ohms, but I'm not sure what they were originally on because it has two different type of coils. Both are yamaha coils but with different part numbers and both are different sizes.
I have figured out the guy I bought it off of was a cobbler on the bike but I'm trying to get the kinks worked out.

Thanks for all the help on here.

I went back and read the ohms again they are 2.5 ohms on each coil. One coil has hitachi 1984 on one of the spark plug wires, the other has Hitachi 1981.

For the XJ ignition, a reading of 2.5 ohms across the primary is good. You should have 12K ohms across the secondary (without the plug caps installed). If that's the readings you have, they should work.....

Also one other problem I've been having since I got the bike is that the 1 & 2 cylinders get warm but not to the point of burning your hand, not even on the pipes. The 3 & 4 cylinders get extremely hot till it's an instant burn if you accidentally tap them with your hand.

Are you getting spark? Sounds like you may be having TCI issues or possibly pickup coil problems. The pickups aren't a regular issue with XJs but it's possible.

All the plugs are getting spark. The 4th plug is the only one that looks like it is getting a real weak spark and not firing correctly, but it is one of the pipes that get too hot to touch.

I would try plugging in a known good TCI and see if that makes a difference.

If I could get my hands on one I would. Any way to test the tci that is on there now?

Yes, the pickup coils are less suspect on the 81 and the XJ, but for ten dollars worth of wire to fix if it is wrong, I would hate to have spent the $100 or so to replace the coils or the TCI only to find it was the pickup coil wires.

Start at the beginning, the pickup coils start the process of signaling the coils to spark. They give the TCI the signal, the TCI adjust for the programmed timing and then signals the coils to spark.

Davinci use to have a web page on how to test the TCI.

Being 1&2 suggest a fuel problem to me. Either supply to them or pilot circuits plugged.

You know, your right. I was thinking it was 1 & 4 for some reason.

Very possibly a feed problem from that left petcock.

I believe it was all electrical connections that was my problem. I finished changing out all the the plugs on the original wiring harness with but connecters. I put the gas tank on backwards so I can recheck the sync of the carbs and as soon as I touched the starter button it roared to life before I could get the button pushed all the way in.
Before at lower rpms it was stumbling bad when jerking on the throttle, now while idling I jerk the throttle back and it doesn't hesitate to re right up.

Took for a little test ride, and have to say it is running like a different bike. I've got to do a little tuning to get the popping out of the exhaust when I let off the throttle. I am becoming more pleased with it now that it will run.
