  • The value of troubleshooting!

I've been troubleshooting all my life. First 20 years worked on automated industrial equipment last 10 in IT. I've tried to teach people how as it comes easily to me but some don't get it and its the same process no matter what you work on. Look at the whole item, break in down into all its components, then rule out each one. I've trained people that understand that and others just want to throw parts at the problem.

Previous owner of my XS handed me this and said "it quit working so my son took it apart. We installed another one and it doesn't work either. Don't know whats wrong" Unfortunately the other one is a 120 speedo not the 160.

Well lets see, drive gear, cable, speedo. Took the speedo cable off from the speedo and pulled out the core, no breaks. check. Taped it to the handlebars and went for a ride, no spin, check. Input spins easily on both speedos. I'm guessing its the drive gear. My XS has a Kerker so no center stand. Have to drop the Kerker to change oil so on next oil change (soon after title) the kerker comes off, center stand on, oil change and a drive gear change.

Cost: destroyed hard to find 160mph speedo AND a drive gear. I suppose it may be possible to replace the broken needle and install these guts in the 120mph case.
