  • shims?

    OK.....trying to get this 79 running. In an atempt to get it running better I pulled the valve cover and checked clearances. I have 4 valves that need adjustment.

    The first one I went to adjust was #4 intake and it was at .076mm so I need to open it up. -.120mm would put at loose spec.-.100mm at tight. The shim that's in there is a .255 so I need a .135-.155 shim. Yeah right, the thinnest I have is a .225. Nowhere near what I need.

    WTF? Grind some off the top of the valve stem?

    I don't think there are shims that thin are there?

    hey greg,
    whats all that in imperial?

    each shim is equal to a whisker under 2 thou,

    makes it easier in trying to convert
    rather than using metric.

      Specs for the 79 are .006 to .008 in. the .225mm shim puts me at a tight .004 in. Just in specs for an 80-81 which is .004 to .006.

        The shim guide in the FSM shows shims down to 200. I am sure they are available but may be hard to come by. Maybe Yammrobber will be your only choice.

          ive been running my sports with 4thou clearances,
          my engine is basically the same as the 78/79 2h7 engine,
          u could try grinding the shim down, not as easy as it sounds
          but can be done, place the grounded down side into the bucket.

            @ Rasputin....It would probably be cheaper to change the head.

            @ petejw.... I'm gonna go ahead and check the other 3 and see where they are. I don't think a little surgical grinding is completely out of the question.

                Someone check my math please.

                I have a 2.225 shim in now, my clearance is approximatly .100mm (.004 in.).

                Specs being 0.16 to 0.20mm (.006 to.008in).


                What do I need here?

                  225 shim clearance is at .004
                  220 shim clearance would be .006
                  215 shim clearance would be .008

                    .002in shows to be .050800mm on the conversion chart.What am I missing?

                      It's not exactly .002"; each shim size change is .00198" more or less, so you'll get a little 'size creep'.

                        Greg. When I last ordered some shims (about a yr ago) they came in at $7.45 Canuck bucks per shim. Thinking a head may be a tad bit more than that.

                          OK........I screwed up again. First of all my math sucked I should have used the chart to begin with.

                          first, I put a .250 in place of the original .255 and it fell right into specs.

                          Second, this is the shim I was thinking was a .225.........
