  • UNI foam to replace XJ11 paper filter

Rebuilding a filter on the XJ11 and the filter is unobtanium. I moded a K&N to an old filter frame as was done before me and it works well enough, I just want to put original pipes, jetting & air filter back into the bike to see if I prefer how it runs that way. I'd put a Uni filter in my XJ650 Maxim with the understanding it was the same air flow characteristics as the original cloth/paper filter and I've been happy with it.

I got ahold of some UNI foam material at the local bike shop, the green foam that's 5/8" thick and was going to use that on the XJ11 filter frame and then went to re-oil my store bought Uni filter in the 650 and noticed there are two layers to the foam; a green outside and a darker section foam underneath.

The local bike shop said the green was all I needed to duplicate the air flow of the original cloth/paper filter. Anyone else done anything like this & found the single green piece is sufficient as an original filter? I don't want to have an excessive air flow and can't find any similar paper material to graft on the filter frame.

    Thanks.

I use a uni, bought it new, I just use the green one,it doubles filters because it folds to the back side to.wondering if somebody put two on the 650.or maybe it seperated.not sure.I like mine, easy to clean (I use laudry detergent) and then I use k&n arosol oil.works great

Send me a PM and remind me, but I think I have a good OEM one if you want it.

      Let me know.

No, it came that way "stock", has a black inner filter and a green outer one. Apparently all the ones specific for a bike model have 2 layers. To the good, apparently the black is the layer closest to the air in and it's a coarser material to snag big chunks. Probably does little to affect the air flow.

I picked up an extra XJ air box on ebay for nothing hoping to mod it with a newer filter. So far I see no easy way to mod it with all the angles, theres not a flat spot on it thats big enough to help and in the right place. May have to buy those ridiculous priced OEM ones
