Rear shock question

I have been looking at pics of a lot of stock bikes on this forum. I have noticed the coil on the rear shock is set to be long. The bike I just got has the adjustment on the shock so the coil is at the shortest. I see there is an adjustment. Can that be adjusted so the coil does not have as much tension on it. I plan on riding two once in a while but the way it is I feel every bump.

Yes, the spring preload is adjustable. The lower sleeve can be rotated with a large channel lock pliers. There is a specific tool for adjusting the preload but chances are good that you don't have it. Pliers will work fine, just make sure both sides are on the same setting.
