  • Advice on buying this 84 xs1100?

Well I found this bike in town and was wanting everyone's opinion on it. Owner says it's an 84. Things he knows it needs is a valve cover gasket, new ignition(or key), seat and that's pretty much it. I'm pretty sure he has the sidecovers. I'm headed to look at it tomorrow evening. He just doesn't want to work on it. I have little knowledge of the 84. Here's some pics. Thanks for your help! He wants 500 for it but I think I can barter with him.

There is no such thing as an 84 XS1100, 81 was the last year and then it was the XJ in 82 and up to 83 I think in Canada.

IMHO check the numbers on the title.

That's a '80 Special, so you better check the title really well. There isn't any such thing as a '84 XS11....

Given the condition and missing parts, that's a $300 max bike IMO if the title is good. No or messed up title, it's parts, $200 or less.
Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

          Compare title to frame!

Make sure it has a title & that the frame # matches same.
We're still getting title horror stories on here.

VIN# is on right side frame neck.

I didn't think so, but he seemed sure. I asked again and now he said 1985 xs1100 so I am curious to see what the title/bike says tomorrow. It would be nice if it was an '80 special since it'd be great for parts. I am really liking the exhaust on it..

The first 3 digits on the steering neck on the right side will tell you what year the bike is by referencing the following chart...

              http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=396
              2H7 (79) owned since '89
              3H3 owned since '06

Are you ready to tackle a non-running bike? Sounds like it doesn't run so no telling what all is actually wrong. After 2 problem titles I no longer trust anyone selling a vehicle and without it running it needs to be real cheap

I would really like to actually work on a bike and get one running. I'm working on another deal here in Shawnee for a '80 xs850 special .Seems like a nice learning challenge, and my living room seems so bare after moving my 80sg out

Plans to look at it fell through, I'll see it later this week and chime back in. Thanks for everyone's advice
