  • the never ending flow of questions....

ok, so got the 79 up and running, all the fuel lines are correct, valve clearances are within specs, and everything seems good, except when i rev the engine, it often stays around 4000 rpms, and wont go down unless i change the idle screw. it will then repeat regardless of where the idle screw is. so my question(s) is, is this due to the carbs being out of sync/needing tuning? or does the jetting need to be switched around? (stock exhaust, mikes xs pod filters) one other thing is, the plugs were a bit oily and needed to be wiped clean before the bike started again. idk if thats just because of excess oil in the engine from the rebuild, or piston rings or what, but i'm going to start it again and check the hot compression numbers later today.

(i put some marvel mystery oil in the oil, and a bit of seafoam in the non oxy ethanol free gas too, so idk if that would change anything either...)
1979 xs special, just finished the top end rebuild and then i still have lots of work.
    progress thus far...

Have you done a sync yet? Have you adjusted the idle fuel mix yet? Those are the biggest causes of a hanging idle.

Don't bother with a compression test until the rebuild is broken in. The rings need some time to fully seat and seal to the cylinder walls. sync the carbs now and then again after the break in of the engine. Check for "hang ups" in the carb linkages and make sure each carb butterfly valve will snap closed under the spring pressure of the butterfly spring when standing alone off the rack. Any binding of any butterfly valve will affect the entire rack. Don't start jetting until you are sure the carbs are working properly.
