  • Interchange Guide: Seats, Sidecovers, Taillights

Another installment of what fits what... I'll go over seats, sidecovers, grab rails and taillights this time. Seats and sidecovers generate more questions and confusion than any other 'body' parts as so many turn up missing or rusted out, so let's try to clear it up some...

    Seats:

Just like many other parts, these are more-or-less specific to either the standard or the special. There is some interchange, but fit can be poor with the wrong seat so depending on how important that is to you, be aware of the differences. There are different seat patterns and some variation in the foam design between models, I'll deal here with just the 'main' differences i.e. the seat pans as the foam/covers can be swapped. There's four different seat pans; '78-79 standard, '79 Special, '80-81 standard, and '80-81 Special.

This the '78-79 standard seat. Identical except for trim color, these will exchange no problem. These have a chrome rail attached (missing on the '79 seat shown) and include a 'grab strap' across the seat. The TCI (mounted on the rear fender) is covered by the 'tail cone' on these models, so these won't fit any other models with the TCI directly under the seat. Not shown is the rare 'accessory' touring seat available from Yamaha for the '78-79 standards. Similar to the later standard seats, but longer to cover the TCI, with a straight lower edge and a chrome trim strip around the lower edge.

Here's a direct comparison between a '78-79 standard seat (left) and the '80-81. Note the 'scoop' in the later pan between the mounting brackets for the TCI. The tail cone is gone, the seat pan extends back further and 'wraps'.

Here's the '79 Special (left) and the later '80-81 Special (SG, SH, LG, LH). If you're lucky, the 'octy' diagram sticker will still be in place and is a positive ID of these seats. Note that the 79 seat is very similar to the '80-81 standard seat, but it doesn't extend back quite as far. It is possible to exchange these two types ('79 Special and '80-81 standard), but the inner fender needs to be swapped to slightly relocate the TCI. The '80-81 Special is 'open' in the back for the taillight....

... as seen here, so if used on other years will appear unfinished. There's a few other issues with seat swapping too. One issue that may or may not be a problem is the standard and special seat pans are shaped slightly different in the front for the fuel tank, as seen here...

This is a standard pan, the special pans are 'cut' straight across as shown by the white line. If you're trying to use a Special seat with a standard fuel tank, you may need to trim the pan for clearance. The other issue relates to the sidecovers, so let's look at those...

    Sidecovers:

There's only three types of these, but there's one oddball one thrown in for good measure...

This is a '78-79 standard cover. Easily identifiable by the 'tab' on it's upper edge. These have slots in the top edge for attaching to the frame and will only fit the '78-79 standard frames.

Here's a '79 Special cover. Except for the emblem, the '80-81 standard cover is identical and can be exchanged with no problems; these use slots like the above standard covers. The left side cover is also identical except for the slots; the 79 cover still has them, the '80-81 covers have round holes instead. These can be swapped if you modify the holes. Note the shape; the 'tab' is gone, and the cover tapers slightly towards the rear. More on this in a moment...

Here's a '80-81 Special cover. Note the 'reveal' line around the edge is now gone and the cover is more rounded. The taper has been increased so the cover is shorter at the rear edge. Round mounting holes on both sides...

... like this. Note that the lower mounting points are the same for all covers, but the top are not. These only fit as noted above unless you alter the bike frame to relocate the mounts. Here's the issue of the seat/sidecover fit....

This isn't to scale, but this illustrates another difference in the seats. The lines represent the lower edge of the seats. As they increased the taper in the sidecovers, they lowered the seat edge to match (to maintain a even gap between them), so trying to use a newer-than-the-sidecovers seat will cause the seat to hit. Go the other way, and you get a large gap.

    Taillights:

Not too much here; the standards all used the 'same' unit, as did the Specials except for the '79 model. Here's the standard mount...

Only one difference to note here; there's two versions of the mount, a 'US' model and the 'Euro' model. Some of the latter were fitted on US bikes, as seen in the top mount; note the 'clamps' below the plate brackets. If you had the right parts, you could hang the rear turns off these. Unfortunately, the needed parts were only used on non-US models, so they'll be tough to find in the US.

'79 Special taillight, on the fender. A one-year-only item on the XS. This is also used on the '78 & '79 XS650 Special, the '79-'80 XS650 Special II, and the '78 & '79 Xs750 Special. The SR500 uses the same light as well.

The main taillight backplate and lens. All the same for all models except the above noted '79, and a slightly different lens on the '80-81 Specials as shown. Same size/shape as the standards except the clear area to light the license plate is colored red on the specials.

    Rear Inner Fender:

    Three versions of these...

Left to right: '78-79 standard, '80-81 standard, and '79-81 special. The latter two have mounts for the TCI. Not obvious in the pic, but there is supposedly a difference in these two as there have been reports of the seat hitting the TCI if the fender doesn't match the seat.

    Grab Rails:

Last item for this installment. The rail is part of the seat on the '78-79 standards as shown above. Here's the two similar-but-not-the-same steel bars off the '79 special and '80 standard...

... with the special unit on top. It has that bend, the standard unit is straight. These won't interchange without mods as the rear mount holes are in different places.

Lastly, the '80-81 special bar. Cast aluminum, with the taillight mount integrated into the bar. The MNS bars are the same piece, just gold.

The '81 standard didn't use a grab bar, it had a luggage rack instead. The '80 grab bar will fit in it's place if desired.

Thanks Steve for putting all this in one spot. Its easy to figure out.
Now xsives can shop with some confidence as to what they're looking at and whether it'll fit or not.

Now I've gotta ditch my 78-79 standard seat for the correct 80-81 standard. LOL.

Hmmm, apparently I have a "euro" tail light mount.

Well done Steve. Learned some new things, now I can stop learning for today cause I exceed the one per day quota.

          Interchange Guide: Seats, Sidecovers, Taillights

Thanks Crazy Steve. I'm new here and am not sure if I'm doing this right. Very well explained. I plan on swapping seat, tank, headlamp, flashers and gauges for the standard look. Someone in my area has a complete 78 standard (but bad shape motor) for sale cheap so I will take what I need. Any tips for tank or else swap is welcomed.

Just a note on the seat fitments, Steve. I only have a 78E and a 79 SF to view here but there is a big difference in the height of the rear slotted frame mounts.
Took these while checking on fitment of an XS1100 police solo seat.
Note the lugs in the foreground of the pics

^ 78E ^ sit almost flush with the top of the rear frame tubes

^ 79 SF ^ elevated by about 3/8ths - 1/2 an inch above the frame tubes

Not sure how the later models compare but might save someone a headache when attempting to swap bits over.

If you need a tail light for a '79 Special (XS1100SF), it is also used on the '78 & '79 XS650 Special, the '79-'80 XS650 Special II, and the '78 & '79 Xs750 Special. The SR500 uses the same light as well.

What you're probably seeing is the difference between the US and non-US versions (2H7 vs 2H9). I actually checked this when contemplating 'converting' a SG frame over to a E/F configuration and those brackets were two of the few I wouldn't have had to change (gave up the idea... too much work). These models have two different part numbers on the frames and two different seats. They look the same at a glance, but a careful look shows they're actually two different stampings...

2H9 at the top, 2H7 at the bottom. For those of us in the US, it's kind of moot anyway, as every model except the E/F had the TCI under the main seat pan and you'd have to heavily modify the E/F seat to clear it....

                        Signal light

These lights are available from many sources. The front ones require a longer threaded tube than the rear. I think that's what Steve is making reference to.
