  • Aftermarket mirror selection??

I recently replaced my Special buckhorn handlebars with a set of sport bike bars.
I was able to fit, (just barely) the stock perches, mirrors and control switch units, but I am not thrilled with the mirrors. I feel like I am in my own way when I looking in the mirror to make a lane change.

I have looked at the local parts store, but haven't seen anything that looks like a better solution.
I'd like to find something that has a longer lateral reach, to get closer to the end of the bars.

I know that many of you have made bar swaps. What type of mirrors are you using? Any pics available?
    Thanks folks
    Mike

I've seen some pics on here of a few guys using "bar end" mirrors. Apparently you cut the end off your grip and these fit with a pressure plug mount in the end of your bars. If i'm correct in what i've seen and what I think i'm talking about lol, those should give you plenty of lateral movement compared to your stock mirrors.

      mirror extender

Bar end mirrors just seem to be asking for a hang-up on something.
Check *bay for motorcycle mirror extenders. usually 1 1/2" up and 1 1/2" out.
plus the normal reach of your mirror

I've been riding with bar-end mirrors on my Special for a couple of months now since I switch to superbike bars: everyday commuting in tight parking decks, on the interstate, and rush hour traffic, etc. I love them. It takes getting used to looking down toward the mirrors when you're used to the other ones, but it's not terrible by any means, and after a few days of riding I probably won't go back. My suggesting is get a $25 pair from eBay and try them out before you sink much money into it.

My aftermarket bars had a plastic plug I pulled out, and then you just buy open-end grips or cut the ends off your existing grips (what I did), and fit them in the end of the bar. Took about 15 minutes.

I'm running superbike bars on my SF. My CRG Lanesplit mirror has a folding feature that will move if hit or bumped. Images are clear as a bell with it, just a great mirror. It's also really pricey.

I recently bought a pair of cheap bar end mirrors Ebay from overseas for $11 shipped!!! They look nice, and appear to be worth much more than what I paid.

I block alot of wind and so i too used to see my shoulders in the mirrors. I found the aftermarket mirrors were too short but the long ones were all round and i very much liked the square view that the XS Special mirror gives. So, i found cheap aftermarket long-stem mirrors and threaded the ends to fit the Special square mirror. Viola!

Here you can see they hang way out beyond my hands..

              OK...so I'm not allowed to edit..so

The mirrors are a combination of:

              Glass - Mike's XS's part # 16-3010

Stalks - EMGO #20-34900 (LEFT) and 20-34910 (RIGHT)

Note: you HAVE to thread the stalks 10mm to install the glass, the EMGO stalks have no threads on them

I use these teardrop shaped ones on my Special.

They are a really nicely built unit that's heavy and doesn't vibrate. Very nice chrome also. The only problem is that they used to sell them for a Yamaha, (Reverse threads on the right side) and don't seem to any more, so you'd need an adapter. They also have a longer stemmed version, but they're a little higher.

Those are actually the ones I'm running, and I think I paid about the same. The only complaints I have about them are that the installation hardware was kind of cheesy, but they cost less than $15 so who cares. Once they're installed, they're solid.

It's kind of depressing that mirrors like these can be made so cheaply. Though I like to support U.S. companies, $11 shipped for two mirrors c'mon. Two CRG Hindsight Lanesplit mirrors are $150. Better quality for sure, but.......
