  • Check Oil/Brake Light

    Hi all,

So the light came on and hasn't gone away for a few hundred miles, despite the oil being just fine and the brake light and brakes working perfectly. I seem to remember that there's something unique to the Specials (mine's a '79 SF), but I can't recall or find what it is. Any ideas?

The oil pressure warning light switch is right in the middle under the carbs. Disconnect the wire to it and if the light goes out you've got a bad switch.

The brakelight is probably the switch either in the handlebar lever or the rear brake pedal out of adjustment.

    They aren't related.

Does your tail light work? If not that is why your oil light is on. I had this happen to me and I thought my engine was toast turns out I just needed to replace the light bulb.

The 79 Special has a light checker unit that is located under the left side cover. It is supposed to illuminate the oil light when it senses a burnt out tail light bulb. It will also illuminate the oil light when it malfunctions. Try unplugging it and jumping the blue and the blue/yellow wires in the harness connector and see if the light goes out. Sometimes just twisting the wires at the base ou the LCU will make it function properly again.

          Hey guys,

Thanks so much for your help. I've been away from the bike for a while, but I'll try your suggestions when I return.

          Thanks again,
