  • Strange problem with Neutral light!

    Hey folks,

Okay, my neutral light quit working a month or so ago. Yesterday I got down under the bike, unscrewed the wire that goes to the sending/grounding neutral switch at the bottom front location of the shift cover/tranny cover. I then had the key on, and touched it to the frame to ground out the wire just like the neutral switch is supposed to do....I kept hearing a clicking sound under the seat/battery area like a relay was throwing? Also the neutral light never came on. I had swapped out LED bulbs for the gauge bulbs, the neutral, high beam, but kept the incandescent for the low fuel due to the LED would stay on all the time because they need so little current, and there is a small current running from the fuel sender all the time!

I don't "THINK" the neutral LED bulb is burned out, not much heat in the speedo gauge to damage the LEDs, and the other LEDS are still working.

Any thoughts? I guess I'll have to pull the gauge and TEST the neutral light bulb, as well as pull the seat to see if I can figure out what relay is throwing, and WHY?

TC, it sounds like you may have a bad ground elsewhere in the harness and when the neutral switch is 'open' something is looking for a ground path. That would have taken the LED right out with the higher current flow, check your grounds...

Sounds like a short to me. If it was searching for a ground and burnt out the light it would have lost the ground when that happened. If it lost it's rerouted ground then the relay,or whatever it is, wouldn't be clicking.

I'll bet the neutral light wire is shorted somewhere. Probably in the pickup coil harness.
