  • Floating rotors

Hi guys, I see there was a short discussion on floating/semi floating brake rotors and I wanted to try to get more information on them b/c I've been giving them a lot of thought.

What model and year of bikes use float or semi-float rotors that are a direct bolt-on for our XS?

Will rotors from any year FJ1100 or FJ1200 bolt on to the XS wheel and be compatible with the XS caliper?

I'm really looking for a set of calipers exactly like the ones in this clip... (fast forward to 1:50)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4T47Wp4e54

Here is the only other discussion I found on modern floating rotors... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...floating+brake

    Hey Marshy,

I can't remember exactly but I thought it has been said that the rotors for the 850s can fit the 1100, but when I check the fiche, the numbers are different, but in the 850 diagram the item number points to the pair of rotors, whereas with the 1100, the number points to 1 rotor?

    80 850G pair of rotors 1J3-25831-50-00
    80 G 1 rotor 1J3-25831-00-00

The UK site has their nifty parts # cross check but I don't think it will reveal any newer model bikes because they are cross checking the exact part #, and on newer bikes, if the part is changed, it gets a newer number.

You might try writing to the guy in the Video and ask him where he got the rotors from....but they may have been $$ aftermarket ones designed for th e850, not necessarily just finding some newer types from some other bike that just happen to fit the 850?? Also will need a good german>english translator app!

Further discussions are the need for a floating rotor when you have a floating caliper, aside from just reducing the weight with a newer thinner rotor design with lots of cooling holes drilled in it!

      Short answer.... none and no....

The only direct bolt-on floating rotors that I'm aware of is the few new offerings by EBC for these bikes, but at about $150 each not exactly low budget. The FJ rotors are smaller in diameter (and aren't floaters anyway).

The guys on the UK site have had some luck finding some that fit with mods, but their choices are all off bikes that were never sold here or even more rare than the XS.

The main problem you'll find is the XS used a particularly thick rotor, much thicker than what is now commonly used. So finding a later-model caliper that will fit is an issue.

Keep in mind that floating rotors aren't needed (or even particularly desired) with the stock calipers, and not 'required' for rigid-mount calipers. There's lots of stock bikes that don't use floating calipers with rigid-mount calipers.
