I replaced my starter button (seemingly straighforward) Saturday with one of Tkat's machined buttons (an impressive piece of work btw), and looked very forward to riding on an unusually nice afternoon. When I pushed it to start, it started up ok but the starter did not stop when I released the button and kept running while the engine was running (the button was not stuck in). Turning the ignition off did not stop either nor did the engine kill switch. By this point I was panicking. I had to take off the side cover to get a wrench to take off the seat to disconnect the battery! So the starter ran constantly along with the engine for a couple of minutes. I took out the new starter button and was able to start up with the old one (which had fallen out due to the retaining rim breaking off). Everything worked as it should and I went off to ride. But as I rode there was an occasional clicking noise coming from the starter, so I came back and haven't had a chance to investigate further.
Help....does it sould like I fried my starter or the relay, how could I check my starter (can I remove it by itself or is more disassembly involved), and how could the switch short out like that? Much appreciation for any help.
