    Hey Randy,

This sunday, 4/15 is still up in the air. Don't hold up your schedule on my account. If not, then 4/28 is a lock. Adult beverages of your choice, and snacks, on me. Of course, I'm going to work on it between now and then. See what kind of damage I can do.

And by the way, don't tell the guys here, but I have bought EVERYTHING!!. SS brake lines, pads, front and rear mc rebuilding kits; extra valve shims, the motion pro carb tool (pos); the 4 gauge carb tool (on it's way); all the parts for the fish tank carb tool (I built it), a fairing from member ESJr. (still in box); plastic cleaner; chrome cleaner; aluminum cleaner; brake fluid; new feeler gauge; 4 kinds of carb cleaners not including sea foam; sea foam; a gallon of oil; new plugs; new plug caps; and carb boots (on the way); 4 poor man's carb kits; and extra carb cover screws (I lost one already); and extra valve cover bolts. Not to mention a real mc jacket and mc gloves. (I've never worn those in my 25 years of riding -- just regular clothes.
Hill? What hill? I didn't see any hill! Why wasn't there a sign? And where are my keys?

            Howdy neighbor!

Sorry for the delay, but I missed this message. The latest is that I did what everyone here says not to -- I pulled the carbs and brought them to a shop. I'll do a full at-home carb rebuild in the winter. Or maybe I'll do one on my '77 GS550, which is not running at the moment. I just don't have the time.

I brought the carbs to circle cycle in Ridgefield Park. There are two older guys there who seen to know about carbs on old bikes. They're going to charge me a reasonable price to clean them up, and try to figure out what's going on with number 3. The place is pretty interesting -- they don't sell new bikes at all. The just do service and sell parts and accessories. The price is pretty reasonable.

I'll let you know how they do.

#3 carb is just notoriously EVIL!

+1 on that. Whenever there is a problem that is the one that seems to pop up most often.

I made a #3 out of a #1 fairly easily. I had to order a tap from China to put the idle speed screw in but that is the thread pitch on several other parts too so I can use it elswhere.

+2 on that. My #3 seems to keep the spark plug just a Lil darker than the rest. I gave up. If thats how it wants to live its life I'm gonna let it.

Do you guys have any idea why 3 is so problematic? Could it have anything to do with the fact that it's the "fixed" carb?

That IS the problem. You NEED to have #3 right, and THEN adjust the rest of the bank. It's not rocket science, but I've work with a few rocket scientists who could NOT figure carbs out! (and yes, I HAVE worked with rocket scientists on two previous jobs...)

                            wassa kanuter?
FYI a 4-way ATF filled manometer is 13 times more accurate than Mercury-filled carb sticks and way more easy to read than the 30ยบ blur you get on vacuum gauges unless you buy the glycerin-filled ones at $100 each
OK, it's gonna be 6 feet tall and you gotta know how to use it but there's drawbacks to every gadget.
Like the old boilermaker said when the contractor asked him for a detailed invoice:-
To turning out on a Sunday to take the dent out of your boiler with one blow of my sledgehammer; $50.
