  • front master cylinder plunger

How do you get that damned thing out? It looks like a circlip is holding it in, but it's under a lip and I can't see any way to snag it.

There is sometimes a plastic ring in on top of the snap ring. But yes there is a snap ring that needs to come out before the plunger does.

Thanks Nate, i think that is a plastic ring on it. Is it ok to tear that up? The rebuild kit doesnt have one.

Some seem to have them and some don't. I would imagine it would be fine without it.

That plastic ring is supposed to be a retainer for a rubber dust boot. If the dust boot is missing, you don't need the ring....

Mine didn't have either, and doesn't seem to affect it. You can probably pry it out with a pick. After that, the circlip, and the plunger pulls out. You've probably got treasure awaiting you in there

I swear, pulling apart the master cylinders and cleaning the crud out is the most satisfying feeling. I don't know why.

Don't despair, these master cylinders are really easy to disassemble and reassemble, which is lucky for us because they seem to always need to be cleaned. Apparently there are a lot of bikes with 20+ year old brake fluid still in them .

One thing to caution you about when you put it all back together, is to make sure you don't overextend the master cylinder plunger when bleeding, because it can make the seal inside flip around, and you'll end up having to tear it back apart. Not the end of the world (it's a 15 minute job to pull apart), but just a caution . Some here recommend putting a block of wood behind the lever to help limit the stroke, but I just kept my hand behind the lever and pumped with my index finger to bleed.
