I've put my carbs back in and she runs!

While I was at it, I put in new pads front and rear. Initially, the braking wasn't so great which is normal for fresh pads on old rotors; they just need to seat properly after some use. However, I think I took too hard of a 'emergency braking scenario' (to aid in seating) for now there is vibration upon using the front brakes :s . Warped rotors??? I'm kind-of worried about it; do you think it will go away? perhaps I'll check the run-out somehow.

I've created a new thread to talk about my carb instal!

Your second problem may be partially caused by the above. Yes, there's supposed to be a rubber grommet there, but it's missing on more than a few bikes and nobody has reported the problem you're having. Redo the axle, and make sure the torque plate is 'rotated' forward before tightening the axle nut.
        hey steve,
ive always closed that small gap up when ive refitted
the rear tyre, my thoughts are that the axle would slightly
wear over time and removal, and tightening the axle nut wouldnt bring the swing arm together, closing that gap would prevent the frame
from moving, keep the dust seal pushed against
the bearing and keep the brake bracket sitting firm, it was also
1 of the things i did to the rear end to stop a front end wheel wobble.
i can see where the s/a would bend in slightly but couldnt see it
        being warped,
u know im not trying arguing with u just bringing it up for discussion.

        hey titan,
bike looks good, glad u got it sorted.

Pete, that gap is designed-in, and 'pulling' it over really accomplishes nothing and can cause problems; I've seen it happen.

The swingarm isn't designed to 'compress' the parts assembly; that is done by the shoulder on the end of the axle (the part the swingarm pinches on) when the axle nut is torqued. If it were designed that the swingarm was supposed to do this, Yamaha would have put a flange on the end of the axle to pull the arm over. But they didn't...

I figured this out when I was modifying my swingarm for the 160/80-16 tire I'm fitting to one of my bikes. I had to do quite a bit of welding on the arm, and when I got done, the axle wouldn't go back in easily. I could get it in by driving it with a hammer, but a hammer shouldn't be needed; it should slip in (it did before I started the mods). What I found was that the arm had 'closed up' (the distance between the two sides was reduced), eliminating that gap. By tweaking the distance between the two sides, I could get the axle to push in by hand. And it doesn't need to be off by much; less than 1/16" is the difference between an axle that pushes in by hand and one that needs some serious whacks with a hammer to install or remove (risking damage to both ends of the axle).

I'm not saying that pulling the arm over will permanently warp it, but the risk is there. It will definitely pull it out of alignment, and if the arm takes a 'set' after this, you now have an axle that you'll have to beat in and out....
