Just in the beginning stage of my new 79 xs1100 standard project. The front fender is chrome the rear is painted. Was this a factory look or was something swiched? I have not been able to determine based on pix of other bikes Thanks

All the XS/XJ bikes had chrome fenders (except for the Midnight Specials, which were black), so somebody painted your rear fender...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

He's asking about the rear fender, but it's the same answer; they don't interchange. Mounting points are enough different (as well as where/how the taillight mount) to make a swap tough.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

In fact, you don't even have easy interchange between the various standard models... The '78-79 standards mounted the TCI ignition box on the rear fender (and were the only models that did this), so the '80-81 fenders lack the mounts. If you try to relocate the TCI to under the seat like the later bikes, then the inner fender and seat won't fit. So if you're trying to go back to stock, you'll need to find a chrome '78-79 standard fender....Last edited by crazy steve; 04-05-2012, 12:29 PM.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Depending what type of paint it is, try using a rag with gasoline on it. It may dissolve the paint and will leave the chrome alone.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

If the gas doesn't take the paint off, acetone or lacquer thinner should, unless it is powder coat, or urathane. Test an inconspicuous spot first. Like underneath the tail end. Look for rust pits. If you see them, give the whole exercise some more thought. CZ

lacquer thinner will remove most anything.. including the skin from your fingers if you play with it too long... Some one painted it for a reason. Hopefully the chrome underneath isn't jacked. If it is then your @ a cross road of rechrome or repaint...Don
