    Mission Creep

    After restoring multiple tractors and many other things I know better. Went to start the final swap and it hit, wow swing arm looks rough and the bearings need greased, wheels look kind of ratty. Now all the parts are in the back of my trunk. (I'm an apartment dweller at the moment).

    Found some Epoxy paint in a spray cans at Advance, going to do the wheels in satin black and the steel pieces in gloss black. Have everything from the swingarm back out. Will paint the calipers too while its apart. I'm not a fan of rattle cans but don't have a makeshift booth at the moment.

    600 grit, 1000 grit, 1500 grit, 200 grit. Then paint and finish polish with Mothers. Rear wheel is ready for final cleaning and paint.



    Just getting started on the front, this one is really bad. Lots of oxidation.

    what wheels are those? i like em...
    79 XS11 special "Loki" - homemade 4-2 exhaust, pod filters, rebuilt forks with progressive springs, tkat fork brace, progressive shocks, rebuilt all brakes and MC's, rebuilt carbs with #142.5 main and #42.5 pilot, a custom front and chin fairing, and a handmade set of saddlebags....

        ah...will they fit on a 79 xs1100 special?

          82 xj1100 wheels, I think they were on many bikes, I know my 81 Virago had them too. No idea if they would fit but my guess is the major dimensions of the frame were the same so a good chance. There are lots of them on ebay : (

            Yes, the XJ rims will fit right on the XS.

              .... unless you're going from a 17" rear wheel to a 16"; then you need the proper spacer and caliper bracket....

                Did the XJ use the same spacer and bracket as the XS Special?

                  It does, so the XJ rear wheel swap onto a Special is a straight bolt-on...

                          After multiple hours pf prep time another couple hours of taping and painting. Final cleaning was in the bath tub with Dawn dish soap and 3M Green scouring pads and a tooth brush. Found some Epoxy spray paint at Advance. Time will tell if its a good product, my expectations are not high with rattle cans but that's where I'm at right now.

                            If you're offering accommodation and food for a two week holiday in California, I'd like to volunteer to come over and tell you your wheels are 'girly'. But only thump me once, deal?

                              Those off the shelf rattle-can sprays have come a long way and now you have your option of what kind of paint you want. If you get the surface good and clean and roughed up propperly they will last a long time. I just did both of mine about a couple months ago but I did mine during a new tire change so my rubber was off when I did it. It made it a bit easier with the tires off the rims. I think they look better than they did brand new.
