  • heres my xs11

yesterday I traded my TL1000R for a 79 xs1100. heres the progress so far. still not sure what to do with it lol. as of right now the bike isn't running. it will fire up but gas pours out of the carbs. I hope to tear into her soon!

Looks cool! Sounds like your carb floats r set too high. While u r in there might check the jet sizes, as the pods and aftermarket exhaust will want richer than stock sizing and who knows what the po may have installed in there...
Oh and welcome to channel 11, stick around as the ol' farts on here are quite wise when it comes to these machines.

Too much fuel coming through the carbs for some reason. Many times, I've noticed on the earlier carbs, if the bike sits and the carb bowls completely empty, it lets the float needles drop down too far and they get a bit cocked sideways in their hole. When the fuel comes in, the needles are stuck wide open and it free-flows. It can also do this if the floats get a pinhole in them and they fill with fuel and sink.

First order of business, if it were me, would be to order a set of float needles and seats, then remove the carbs and check out float heights and do a good cleaning. Replace the needles/seats, re-install the carbs, then I'd probably change the oil before firing it up. There could have been some gas getting into the oil with it overflowing like that.

Blue header pipes usually means rich, yellow usually means lean.

After the TL, this XS is going to feel like a pregnant pig, but give it some time, and I bet it will grow on you.

it should be a fun fight. I wanted the XS as a learning experience for the most part. I'm not much of a mechanic but I did manage to rebuild the TL so wanted something new to tinker on.

+1 what Trbig stated, including the pipes. Those Jardine Spagetti pipes are single wall headers as any aftermarket pipes are, so color happens anyways. BTW, that bike DOES have the second best flowing exhaust, with stock original being the best flowing. The 'skettis' are getting harder to come by also..............just sayin', so take care of those...BTW, welcome to the madness...

"Blue header pipes usually means rich, yellow usually means lean."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but blue exhaust pipes are usually a lean condition and of course yellow pipes rich.

Okay.........I'll correct ya..............Tod(trbig) IS correct. One extra little tibbit......chrome polish combined with the heat WILL yellow the upper header pipes over time. Hope that gotcha' squared away.........BTW Mojo, Even tho somewhat of a postho some yrs. back, trbig, thru ALOT of trial and error building and rebuilding these scoots, some of that coming with litteral pain and hurts has come to know these scoots well.
