I hit 3 bike shops today and got no shims. Two told me they didn't have any and one told me they buy new ones every time. Is this common around you guys?

I went to the parts dept at the closest big dealer to me. They didn't know what I was talking about. I went to the service dept and the rep didn't know what I was talking about but he went into the shop and ond of the technicians traded me straight up.

If you have on of those old timey backyard motorcycle shops that works on metrics, they should be willing to trade with you.

I know this thread has gotten a bit off topic but... I keep running into these "while I got it apart" kind of things.

I was reading some threads and I ran across a problem I have. I have always left my petcocks in the on position. But this year before I tore it apart I had a bunch of fuel leak out my airbox.

So, this means my octopus is bad AND at least one of my floats were stuck open??? Before I put the carbs back on the bike I will check the float levels so that will get fixed. Should I pull out the octopus and do the petcock mod and run the tank straight to the carbs? maybe with some filters? And, is there any drawback to ditching the octopus?

if its leaking fuel from the air box, u want to check the carbies
needle and seat and on the later model carbs check that the o ring
around the outer seat is ok,
ull also have a leaking petcock and ull have to suss out the octopus
            as well.

I just fixed all this on my SG. I bought 4 carb kits from George Fix for $70. For another $30 I bought a kit to rebuild both petcocks and the shutoff valve (octopus). I no longer have any leaking fuel. When you repair the octopus, be sure to clean the seat. A pencil eraser may do the trick. (I learned that from another member here)

There is no drawback to NO octopus, IF the petcocks don't leak, AND/OR your float needles don't leak. I have a bad habit of walking away with the petcocks on, so I want the vacuum shutoff valve to function properly.
