  • Counter Shaft Question

When removing the countershaft to grind the dogs on the gears I discovered there are 2 washers/spacers on the shaft between the middle drive gear and the bearing...one measures .062 and is against the gear, the other measures .013 and is between the bearing and the larger spacer. I've never seen these mentioned by anyone when they took their tranny apart and these spacers don't show up in the diagram in the FSM. It's not easy keeping these on the end of the shaft while sliding the middle and 1st gear out towards the end of the shaft to get the needed clearance for the shaft to drop in place. Anyone have any experience with this or are these spacers a mystery?

If I understand you correctly, your saying you have a spacer between first gear and the middle driven gear, as well as between the middle driven gear and the engine case/bearing. I know that I have yet to pull one of these engines apart that had either of those washers in it.

Nothing between the middle gear and 1st, just like the manual shows, but 2 between middle and the bearing on the clutch side...you've never seen this? Why would they be there?

Never seen it and I have had four different engines apart for this repair. IMO, having those washers over there would make it nigh on impossible to get the countershaft back in without splitting the cases. The real trick I have found is that the Middle driven gear has a hub on it that fits into an indent in the engine case where that bearing is. Getting it to pop into that "notch" is the trick to getting the shaft back into the bearing. With two washers over there making it even tighter to get that middle driven gear into place I would expect it to require some force to get it into place.
