rear turn signal stalk

My '80 XS11 Special was knocked over last night. At least the jerk offs were nice enough to pick it up for me.

Not too much damage that I can see, but I haven't examined it thoroughly yet. I think the front wheel being in the locked position helped quite a bit. The windshield was broken off, there are some asphault marks on the front turn signal, and the mirror. The tank and exaust seem untouched. The only major damage was to the rear turn signal stalk which was broken off where the bulb housing meets the shaft. Anyone know where I can get the parts to replace it?

The mounting hardware appears to be in tact, I would need the stalk and the bulb housing. The bulb and the orange lens cover should be no problem.

I'm in Phoenix, AZ if anyone knows of any good parts stores around that might have what I need.

Don't buy turnsignals from Parts & More, they're junk.

I bought a set and all of them broke when I tighted the pinch bolt. I paid a high price for a set of turnsignal lenses, in the end that was the only useable part off them.

Check the salvage yards for pieces from and XS650 Special or an XS750 - 850 Special. I think the only difference is the dimesion of the side of the lenses. I am using the fronts t/s, and headlight bucket from an XS850 Special on my 80 XS11 Special. My tail light is from a XS650 Special. It's the same as the 79 XS11 Special. I have to use that particular one because I have the seat from a 79 Special on my 80. The tail light was changed, and moved from 79 to 80. You'd be suprised at what parts will interchange between these models. Just check them closely.

thanks for all the input everyone. I did buy a pair of tail lights from partsnmore right away on thursday afternoon. If they are junk, it's only a $20 loss, no big deal. I'll make sure to be careful when I tighten them down. Found almost the exact windshield I had from denniskirk.com for $55, so all in all, this won't cost me as much as I was expecting. It's a good thing the exaust wasn't damaged...that would have made this a whole different game.

I got another tip from a pontiac forum I frequent which pointed me to www.bikebandit.com They are expensive...they wanted over $50 for the tail light fixture. But they have quite a few OEM parts for our machines if anyone is desperate.

As a result of all this, my apartment building manager felt reeally bad about the situation and gave me a covered parking spot for free (a $20/month value) which is out of the way of pedestrian traffic...should prevent this from happening again. Plus, if I'm lazy and forget to put the cover on, it won't get wet (it does rain in AZ every once in a while).

Amazing. Another XSive guy in Phoenix. That puts the total at like 3. Have you dealt with Bob's Used Cycle yet? I get mixed messages from people and I plan to make a trip there next week.

someone would need to grow a pair and fess up to the crime before they can offer damages.

I don't even care so much about the money as I do the lack of respect for my property. I don't run around our parking lot kicking out the tail lights in their cars.

I really wish I could have seen it happen as I don't know how anyone could have accidentally done it. The bike weighs 700 pounds and is quite sturdy on the kick stand...if I blindly walked into it, I would be the one laying on the ground with broken bits, the cycle would be fine.

Midnight Special

This is actually regarding the front turn signals, but I will try to post it here. I have a 1980 XS 1100 LG, Midnight Special it was given to me for free, it is missing the title and quite a few parts. I have found some parts on Ebay, but there are not many Midnight Special parts to find, especially for the 1100. I found a set of rear turnsignals. I found a headlight bucket from a XS 850, should be the same as on a 1100. I got some turnsignals from a XS 650 that was chromed, and I was going to paint them black and use them in the front. BUT, now I see that when I try to mount them the threaded stud is to short, it does not reach into the headlight so I can get the nut on the end. Anyone know how long the threaded part on the original turnsignals are? The ones from the 650 is 25 millimeters long (1 inch) Any help will be appreciated.

Hey there Midnite,

Don't know the exact length, but shouldn't be much more than about 2", here's a link on PartsnMore showing a replacement front Special light and stalk, so you can sorta gauge by the picture comparing it to the width of the stalk about how long it needs to be! They do screw into and out of the stalk, so you might try unscrewing the one you have to see how much threaded stalk is actually screwed in, might be able to unscrew enough to get the mounting nut to fit, then just put locktite on the section that's in the turn signal!

On your headlight bucket, hope you got one for a Special, cause they had both XS850 Standards and Specials, and they are different, rectangular for Standards, ROUND for Specials!

Hey man, thanx alot, that made my day! I didn't know the threaded stud was removable! Allright, if I can't screw it out far enough to make it through the headlight, I will make a new stud (I work at a metal fabricating shop) Yes, I did get the headlight from a 850 Special, it is round and in pretty good shape, but the "golden ring" is painted black, probably because the gold coating was messed up.
