  • xs1100 wire or tube out of top of starter?

Working on my new find 79xs1100 What would this be it is above the starter cover a wire, or a tubing? I touched it snaped like a twig. Where does it go?

Looked through service manual no luck

You need to be more specific than that. It's better if you can post a photo. If you are referriing to the black wire which is actually attached to the starter motor, then I doubt it would snap like a twig. Is it a tube? ie hollow? Or a wire with cable in the centre?

That's a wire, and it's supposed to go to your oil pressure switch (which would be to the right in the pic just out of sight behind the carbs)...

Exactly right Steve. The oil pressure switch wire runs down under the starter motor and comes out the slot in the starter cover. It plugs in behind the fuse box.

              the wire

Would that explain the red wire attached to the cable going to the sensor center rear of the head? but ti follows up under the tank?

Is there a guage mounted somewhere?

It probably is bypassing the wiring harness for some reason and goes directly to the plug to the oil light in the dash.

                        You need to investigate that.

That strange light is just an auxillary driving light it looks like.

With the wire in that condition it was most likely bypassed because it was shorting to ground and causing the oil pressure light to come on. Very common problem.

If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!
